April 1999 - Converting from a Superlift 4" suspension lift to a Superlift 6" suspension lift

Converting to a 6" suspension lift from a 4" suspension lift was quite simple. The parts were only about $200, which was great. The new parts included new 6" coils, 4.25" blocks for the rear w/ ubolts, and drop brackets for the anti-sway bar.

The project took the weekend to do. Two jacks were needed, as well as some very tall jackstands (I stacked my small jack stands on ramps). I rented a coil compressor, but it wasn't needed to remove the coils. With the sway bar disconnected, the front end drops far enough so that the coils come right out. If you do this, keep an eye on the brake line, because at this point, that is all that is limited the suspension (after you remove shocks).

Since it's the independent front suspension, the front end had to be lifted up each side at a time. Fortunately, the superlift kit comes with universal brackets for the 4" and 6" suspension lift. This meant I didn't need new brackets to convert to the 6" lift. I simply had to drop the TTB arms down and move the bolt from the upper hole to the lower hole on the brackets.

The rearend was a piece of cake as well. Simple remove tires, shocks, ubolts, blocks, then insert new blocks, bolt up, install shocks, and put the tires back on.

Tall jackstands are necessary because you have to put the frame on the jackstands since you are moving the front and rearend down to fit the larger coils and blocks.

I had to get the front end aligned after converting to the taller lift. The alignment was really bad, tops of the tires were out and the bottom was in. It was next to impossible to drive fast because the truck wouldn't steer straight and was really unstabled riding on the edges of the tires.

One other note - make sure you can fit out of your garage after you install the 6" lift. I had to slap on the stock tires on the rear and have 5 buddies of mine stand on the front bumper and air down the tires to about 15 psi to get out of the garage.
