So, yesterday I took the X in for its 45K check-up. Turns out they had to keep it overnight due to an emergency for their diesel mechanic, but no big. Today when I went to pick it up, I was told that I had to change the airfilter more often than I do. It was 85% full. When I explained that I change it every 8K to 10K miles, I was told that that was wrong. The service manager told me that it should be changed every 6K to 8K miles.
Has anyone else heard of this?

Depending on where you live/work and driving environment, the stock filter pretty much stinks in filtering. They are restrictive to begin with and when push hard, do cavitate and aren't worth a darn. As a result of dirty filter being changed too often, ford is now offering the severe duty filter kit. Take a look at my profile for pictures. It is a much bigger filter and air box and should be good for 30000 miles between changes

Did the dealer look at the gauge on the air box to determine level of blockage? I guess I'm curious if the restriction gauge is a good way to judge when to clean the filter or I if need to pay more attention to the mileage interval.

10k miles? holy moly. I have 2 k&n filters for each of my vehicles. They get pulled around 3000k miles or sooner if i have been in the desert. Too much dust, no rain out here in AZ. K&n filters are cool but a pain, you have to let them dry out naturally, thats why one is in a big ziplock bag pre-oiled and cleaned and the other is in the truck. That way i can do an oil change and filter, and not wait all day long for the filter to dry.

there is nothing wrong with the factory filter. after many years of racing and using K@N filters, i found no performance gain. in fact i found big time problems with oil on the MAF. diesels suck a lot more dirt than a gas motor, you will have to change it more often. learn to love it cause thats the way it is. i have ordered the new Ford air filter( everybody is raving over it) and i will give you a real report. i suspect it will not be as good as what you have. dont jump on bandwagons because someone read about it and said it was better than fried icecream. i use Ford parts in every repair i do.

Mike, by the new Ford filter, do you mean the heavy duty version that Dan referred to? Do you think the heavy duty filter will do a better job of keeping out dirt, or just go longer between changes?
Thanks!
Gary
