Whoa! Seriously? That's really suprising. I get that mileage out of my 2000 V-10 when towing. I'm considering trading in for an '03 6.0 PSD, but if that's all the mileage I'll get out of it towing it isn't even remotely worth it.
Does anyone else have different towing mileage data than what Chris has found?

How is the power on the 6.0 vs 7.3 when towing ? I would think as long as you were over 2000 rpm with 3.73's and stock LT265/75R16 tires on the flats and small grades it should stay in OD. I just traded my 2000 7.3 Excursion last week for a new 2003 6.0 Excursion and don't plan on towing my 41 ft TT until I have 10K miles on it. I will be fully loaded with a 15 cu ft roof top carrier ,bike rack in back and seven people when I take my first trip with the 6.0 in October when I go to Hilton Head SC.

I really hate to say this, but this is not the first time I have heard that. A lot of people are not happy with their 6.0 ltr, but others are.
Here is an artile about the 6.0 http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=3280698

Joe, to answer your question on the power,
The power is there but you have to find it. With 3.73 rear your are running at 65-68 mph at about 1800 rpm ,as soon as you drop below that you are in no mans land, you push the pedal and try to ease into it because if you over push it drops a gear in a heart beat and heads for the fuel cell.
I think like yourself I bought the diesel for torque and smooth operation not HP.
The curise control is a different story. This system acts like they programed it for a gas engine ,it veries 2-4 mph on resume and as soon as you approch a grade it hammers the pedel,no thought
process on spooling up turbo to provide torque just smash the pedel down drop a gear and scream.
I taveled back the same route on my 800 mile journey on saturday,I did not use curise at all, lots of heavy grades long and tough pulls, finding the sweet spot on the pedel takes work but lots of power. i could maintain 65-70mph on anything put in front of me.Mileage was up as well, worst 9.2
best 13.0

Chris,do you have stock size LT265/75R16's ? Because only 1,800rpm at 65-68mph seems low . I would be at 2,000 rpm or more at 65-68mph.

That sounds really low! I tow a 28' enclosed race car trailer, about 9500# loaded on trips all over the east coast with 12-15 mpg on the highway with a cruise of abotu 65mph. Towing my open trailer, about 5000#, I've seen as high as 22 mpg on 300+ mile trips. That is with a 7.3l and 3.73 rears turnign stock tires. |

That fuel economy seems very lousy. The factory manual states to not check the fuel economy on the first couple fill ups, and not to tow big for at least a couple thousand miles with the PSD.
I've noticed my 99 PSD with 3.73 non limited slip with 33's runs at lower RPM's that my wifes 00 PSD X with 3.73 limited slip. The RPM's are higher in the X but when I drive both the same way I get better fuel economy out of the X. Usually the X gets at least 16 when the F250 usually gets up to 15 on average although two fill ups I've recorded 17 on the F250. My wife and I have only put 1500 miles on the X so far though so I'm not looking at an overall average yet. Yes, I write down the fuel used and the miles traveled versus going off the overhead! I wish my F250 had the big 44 gallon tank, I put on around 1,000 miles per week!
I've seen posts on www.fordtruckworld were guys were saying there fuel economy went down after the recent reflash on the 6.0's. I guess I'll stick with the 7.3's for now.

Chris,
We got our 6.0 in May of this year and have so far put about 21K on it all but about 1K towing a 28 foot trailer with about 9,000#. We average about 11-12MPG at 70-75 MPH in all cases (A bit better when my wife is driving) I use the cruise control she does not. The trip computer will be off about 1MPG it registers high I have found. Without the trialer we get between 16 and 18 MPG. Car runs great, but seems to lack power sometimes after start up and trying to get the car and trailer to move. Takes going from forward to reverse sometimes to finally get the power to go forward. The computer has been upgraded a couple of times, but still have problem once in a while.
