I was reading the various posts on fuel economy and want to relay my actuals. I am a finance geek, so occasionally a bit obsessive about numbers. I track economy on every tank, from first click to first click on fillup. I just hit 6500 miles on my 02, PSD 4X4 (totally stock). Generally, on a full tank, I average 13.8 on mostly short trips (I am only 8 miles from the office, including idling through the drop off line with my oldest kid). I am a bit of a lead foot, and like to load up the boys for occasional light offroading. The best full tank performance was 16.0 on a trip from Orlando to Charlotte, trying desperately to run 80 in between potty breaks (3 young boys and a pregnant wife). My suspicion is that it would top 20 at 65 to 70, but I can't stand driving that slow. So far, almost every tank was .2MPG better than the last, as it continues to break in.

My impression is that the PSD with its awesome power and torque needs another gear. I am convinced if it were loping at 1900 RPM or so at 80, fuelage would be shockingly robust. Does anyone know how much rubber you can stuff under it without a lift kit? Can the tranny handle another 10% rubber? I am sure that the PSD can handle it, and would love to know what the other folks think.

Another question. What can you clean and treat the plastic running boards with to minimize sun abuse and not result in a slipping hazard? I am afraid to try the normal stuff, because I don't want anyone slip sliding away. In Florida, the sun is brutal on colored plastic.

i dont think you will be able to put an extra gear in your X(unless you go with Gearvendors)very expensive.i am thinking a Suncoast torque converter(lower stall) and a chip)i will be doing all these mods soon(i think i will be a proud X owner in a couple of hours.i think some of the guys here on the board can give you good input on the chip and mileage.

You can keep the plastic looking good with Armour all (The stuff with the UV inhibiters in it) Ive been using it on mine with no slip complaints. I dont use the glossy stuff just the flat. Keeps the black black and the tan looking good. It works good on the rubber stripping as well. Its also great for removing the polishing wax left overs on the plastic and trim.
