Why does the Excursion seem to wander? What kind of steering type equipment can I buy to correct this? It almost feels like there is play in the steering wheel. Is it just the way it is or what? I have only had an excursion for about 3 weeks. It has 30k on it and is a 2000 Limited 4X4. It is very clean. Play in the steering is probably not the right way to explain it but it does seem to wander. Like having to steer more than necessary.

i noticed this same thing bringing my X(2001)back today.its really not bad untill you need to make a quick steering adjustment(transision road on fwy)my heart dropped to my stomach.the stupid thing did not respond.i have read threads about this problem, and its weird.the X does need the rear sway bar(i had two Subs with the same problem)

I had the same problem. I think fords ahave always been over powersteered from the begining, making it feel really loose. I have added new shocks, rear sway bar and upgraded the steering stablizer and it has made a big difference.

I just finished the install of my Hellwig anti sway bar. It does help, as numerous previous posts have indicated. My next move will be for shocks, although I have been advised to go for U or V code springs as the stock springs are too weak. Hope this helps and good luck.

Tires can be a big factor in this department. Make sure you have the correct air pressure. Also be sure it has the right tires on it,(including load range) replace them if the tread is bad or worn out.(I know I know..duh )

On my Landcruiser with chev ps , the ps had an adjustment nut that you could turn in to take out the play in the box . Do the X's have this ? ( can't check right now , wife has truck ) Maybe F**d did this to create vagueness in the steering so that it wouldn't be possible to roll the vehicle in a quick impulse steer ....

i dont think you will fix this with steering box adjustment.now mind you i have had this beast for 2 days, only scared me once, like a ghost understeer?i dont see mechanical things doing this.my tires are pretty worn,Firestones.i will be getting Michelins,(hate the French)but they build a good tire.

My experience has been major front end dive on hard braking. Take that away and I think the handling / control factor will improve significantly, as it's one issue you don't have to deal with during the event.

Oh by the way, please look at your master cylinders (inside truck under dash) and let me know if I was the lone wolf or if there's an issue. I would really appreciate your input.

**** I KNEW I WASN"T THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM !!!!! *****
My 2002/4wd/7.3/53k miles X has always had EXCESS PLAY in the steering. This is DANGEROUS and fatiguing!!! Whenever I cross a tar strip separating lanes you feel the truck move by itself!!! FORD did not put this there to make rollover harder, if anything, it MAKES ROLLOVER EASIER, because you overcorrect and try to catch the truck!!! I'm a FORD lover and love the truck BUT, this is dangerous!!!!
Here's what I,d like you to try because I feel this is a steering box problem, as another owner suggested. With the truck off, park brake on and steering unlocked, see how many degrees of slop/freeplay/dead spot/looseness, or whatever you want to call it, your X has. Mine has at least 5 degrees of deadspot.
That's why you can NEVER hold the wheel in one position and really relax on the road. When I get time I'm gonna' check the steering box itself. I've driven
lots of sh**box cars over the years and know what a loose steering box feels like!!
Now I spend almost 50 grand and my 1981 VW Rabbit Diesel steers better?????
This isn't right !!!! Check your X too.

Postus Scriptum: The X does not "seem" to wander- IT WANDERS ALL OVER THE ROAD !!!

I may have gotten one of the good ones, because mine doesn't have any of the wander the folks here are describing. However, I assume everyone is aware of the difference in feel of a solid front axle car vs. an independent front one, right? Greg/Godfather mentioned that the truck would shift when hitting tar strips, etc. Unfortunately, to some degree, that's a characteristic of a solid front axle.....Independent axles work where one stays on the road while the other might be off. Same thing as a solid axle rear shifting while going through a bumpy corner......that's why so many mfrs. use 4-wheel independent. It takes rough-road shift out of the picture.

I'm not sure if that's waht everone is experiencing, but when mention was made of wander on tar strips, etc., that's what would cause that
