Guys (Gals), please look under dash at where your brake pedal plunger goes into your master cylinder, please advise if it is WET with brake fluid or dry, or if sweating (i.e. damp). Think this may be important. Appreciate year and mileage. |

checking backside of master is something any good tech looks for in a general service of the vehichle on any kind of car or truck.if it is wet,you have a bad master, needs to be replaced.what is your point?

MB,
I have a 'X' w/V10, therefore I have the Vacum-power assist brakes. Do not have any type of dampness. NOTE: The Vacum module is between the master cylinder and my firewall.
I thought on PSD (and diesels in general) you have a hydraulic booster module (runs off of the power steering) in the same place. I would think that if you have ANY TYPE OF DAMPNESS, YOU HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM (How is you steering effort).
The reason could be a small leak in the Hyd. Booster (very small). Hyd. Booster runs a very high preassure and if the leak gets worse, be prepared for a fast flood
and a loss of steering.
The only other thought is that you have a loose/torn/missing gasket between the brake assym. and the firewall.
Now, my knowledge comes from owning burb's, so Ford's might be different.
Hope this helps and Good Luck.

Check under dash? Do you mean inside the vechicle? I looked but only see a plastic shield/guard. Do I need to remove this? BTW, I got my X used with 45K miles and the brakes are very good. Of course I drive like a granny with corns on her feet, so I don't use mine hard.

Gearman and distribution, sorry not to spell it out and perhaps this was better suited for the Diesel forum.
Please note my leaky master cylinder is on a 5 month old 02' Excursion I purchased new and I suspect it has been like that (leaking) since new. As it has been replaced my concern was only for other's safety, thinking that the Forum would be a good place to send out the query.
Sometimes I forget we live in America where few care about anyone else.... plus since Ford service techs don''t check I guess it's every man for himself (sorry to waste your viewing time gearman thanks so much for your constructive comment).
Kind regards,

Manky....
"Can't we all just get along ?"
I read your post as well, and really didn't know where you were coming from with your thoughts, so Gearman, like me, may have just presumed what your thought destination was in YOUR mind and it was not at all what you intended...
I am accused of this all the time, so I am speaking from a place of guilt....
When we send emails/post messages, we write as if the other person has been thinking along the same lines as we are when we're typing it...
Therefore we ASSUME they should know when we start in the middle of a thought what the previous words SHOULD have been... I can't tell you the number of times I wrote something and when it was sent back to me with a question I was amazed that they understood ANY of it !!!
And when we read an email/post we generally are making ALL kinds of assumptions, etc... about the writers frame of mind etc... when we are REALLY reading it with OUR frame of mind... so typically if I'm in a _issy mood, I can get ticked off really fast by the most innane email from one of my staff... but I learned a long time ago to reread and be patient before I BLAST off a cannon shell at them!
A long explanation to say I have to ensure I 'splain myself and don't go off half-cocked or READ with half my mind so I misinterpret what was written...
Let's keep trying to make this as good a site aas the old forums...

Carlos - have it checked. Dealer replaced immediately in my case and I have to say I'm a bit concerned that it's a bigger problem. There's a space between the firewall covering and where the master cylinder mounts to the inside. Run you finger along (it's foam type insulation) look for fluid residue. It's a good thing to watch. JohnB - short answer is no. Long answer is no. History and forward time simply does not allow it.
This is purported to be a user's group, so by not expecting a forum for condesending remarks trumpeted by self gratification I clarified my point. MB |
