I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago detailing my great experience with the Super Chips Micro Tuner (SCMT). I noted then that my mileage had gone up by almost 5 MPG.

Another forum user replied that the SCMT changed the computer's calculation of the mileage and that the overhead console mileage reading would be higher than the actual mileage. So I called Super Chips and one of their tech support people confirmed this. Following along so far?

Well, guess what? I just ran through my second tank to compare actual mileage with what is shown on the overhead console by the computer and they are identical. My calculated mileage on the first tank was 17.88 (city/hwy) and the computer showed 17.9 MPG--the same. I reset the computer, ran through another tank and this one was 19.65 (almost all hwy) and the computer showed 19.7 MPG.

So, in my case at least, the computer is calculating the mileage correctly and WOW what a difference the tuner makes.

Scott,

Don't get me wron, I love my V10 in my 'X'. But your milage with the PSD is really cool (89 octane - $1.62/gal - Chicagoland). hhhmmmm.... (trade-in for 03', 6.0 diesel).

BTW, how would you characterize you driving style and cycle (highway/city)?

I do mostly highway driving 65-70 MPH. My mileage slips by about 3 MPG if I'm pounding away at 80-85, so slowing down makes a big difference.

FWIW, I had a F350 single cab dually with the 351 in it and I never saw greater than 13 MPG and around town it was usually closer to 10. In general, the diesels get better mileage. With the Super Chips Micro Tuner, it gets that much better. As I said in my original post on www.fordexcursions.com, I calculated about an 8-month ROI for the tuner...not bad for such a great boost in performance.

I am going to install a 4" lift kit and 35's next month and as I understand it, my mileage will suffer at highway speeds due to increased rolling resistance and wind drag. I'll post the results.

My overhead display reads 21-22, typically off by 3-4 MPG.

During the summer, I can do 18-19 MPG all day long at 70-74 MPH. Love it. My last Powerstroke, in my '97 F250, did a little better mainly because of the 3.55 gearing as opposed to the 3.73's in the X. Still unbelievable that these vehicles get better mileage than most V8 SUV's that are smaller. Muhahhahahaa.

I can't wait to test-drive a 6.0L and hear how people like it. The mileage results will be interesting...I can only imagine what the aftermarket will bring to the table.

I show 14.5 mpg been as high as 15.2 in my 2002 7.3 liter PSD. Mine is bone stock. The computer shows almost 700 miles till empty in other words about 200 miles per quarter tank give or take that extra hundred miles... this is mostly city miles and on the highway I do not conserve since I am in break in period of the engine I dont use cruise control as of yet. All in all I am happy with my mileage. It is just that I have never seen higher than 15.2 mpg and that was on a trip from chicago to detroit. granted the truck was new. Does the mileage on the computer reflect higher when the diesel is broken in? In otherwords has anyone seen better mileage after the so called break in period on their diesels?

MY experience indicates that the computer is off! Way off - with or without the SCMT on our '02 Ex with the 7.3 PSD....
I always verify something before I believe it... (computer background, I guess ) and when I first got the truck I would double check the computer for the first few tanks... couldn't believe a BEAST could get the kind of mpg the salesman showed that it could do using the computer... Well, it was off by sometimes 5 mpg! While it was another saleman's 'misrepresentation', I still LOVE the truck...
But still asked the dealerships about it... they, of course, did their song and dance showing a page from the manual saying the reasons it could be inaccurate - filling tank while on grade, etc... all the BS that doesn't matter if you use the same pump at the same station each time and fill up the same way each time... over multiple fillups, the average WILL be the average...

Still love the Ex - AND stock it still gets better fuel mileage than I EVER got on the smaller '98 Jeep 5.9 Limited Grand Cherokee with all the bells and whistles I had... even though it's computer was within a tenth...

Add the SCMT and my mileage went up... along with the imporved driveability - it's a win-win....

Have abuddy that has a 2001 XLT Ex - (he says he got XLT cause he didn't think the leather could deal with his small girls - they can do what they want with it !!!)
But he actually lowered his (for the girls is what he told his wife - SURE!)
and put hellwig sway bars front and back and 22 Koyo WIDE rubber on it so it turns better than 90% of the sports cars I've owned...

After he rode with me with the SCMT he RAN out to get one and he says his PSD will spin the large 22's now - no slippage, no problems....

Just my observations... FWIW !!!
