Hopefully some one here can help me to avoid dealer bill. I bought my 2000 X V-10 a month and a half ago, and on ride home I noticed a shudder that i thought was the tranny when it went into OD. The day after I got it home I took it out for a drive and nothing and nothing until today. I took the X to the car wash to spray off the mud. I popped the hood and sprayed the inner fenders and the firewall, avoiding direct spray on the engine. I took the family for a ride after that and found it idles rough light it might not be firing all cylinders, and the shudder is back, but now in 3rd and OD when RPM's are around 2000-2500. I am thinking, and hoping, that maybe some electronics may have gotten wet. Possible the dealer washed under the hood before I picked it up.
Any ideas would be very helpful. This is my first Ford, as I am a converted Chevy ownwer, and not to familiar with Fords yet. I do know I love my X. Thanks.

Sounds like torque converter chatter.

Sounds to me like a bad coil. How many miles do you have on it?

65,000 miles. Guy at work said it might be coil too. He had same problem with his Expy.

Why would a coil only act up at 2- to 2500?

I really can't say...

I had #9 coil go bad. It had a crack in it. I would imagine that after a certain load was applied to it it would ground itself or something and not let all the energy reach the plug.

It only did it in 3rd and OD. Well...a bit in the other two gears but more pronounced in the upper gears. Strange, huh? Replaced the coil pack and all was good-to-go.

My friend said that coil may be cracked, and when it gets wet, as i said in first post, it may be arcing out on the engine block and causing miss-fires in other cylinders under load. Anyone ever hear of anything like that? If this is it I guess next thing would be to figure out which coil is causing the trouble.

Well yes. I just said it happened to me! Although I didn't get the engine wet, it was winter when it happened.

Your dealer or any good mechanic can easily determine which coil pack is bad within a few minutes. Just don't ask me how they do it...

So the coil acted up in the upper gears because of the load. Learn something new every day.
