I have a set of Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs on the stock rims and they slip.
Has anyone else had this problem?
I always mark my tires to know if they ever slip. This set slipped after a 5 mile drive home from the tire dealer. They say its not possible. So I go back and show them. They rebalance and away I go again. I get home and they've slipped again!
I have been back many times for rebalancing but after 14 months and 13K miles they are still slipping and are 75% worn out from all the out of balance miles.
I have read all the posts on this and other sites and although I have read about many people having balance and vibration troubles I have not read anything about slipping tires.
I believe a lot of the problems owners are having have to do with tires slipping and nobody is catching it because most owners don't mark there tires.
My original Firestone Steeltex ATs did not slip once in 39K miles. I need a mud tire with good puncture resistance so I went with the MT/Rs. Other than the slipping I am happy with the tires and Goodyear is willing to sell me a new set at about half price but I don't want to go through this trouble again.
Does anyone have any experience with gluing the tires to the rims? I know a lot of the CJ5 guys do that with these tires but I cant find anyone that's done it. I need to know what type glue to use. Goodyear says they can do it but I don't think they know what glue to use ether.
Thanks

Well, now here is a new topic for discussion. I've read a lot of different things here, but nothing about slipping tires. I always assumed (yes, I know what assuming does ) that the tires were pretty well stuck to the rims and only slipped if you ran really low pressure and loosened the bead.
What pressure are you running? What size tires and rims?
This should be an interesting topic.

That's odd, indeed. The only time I've heard about tire slippage on the rim had to do with somewhat extreme off-road use. Whenever I have had my tires replaced, I have noticed the shops apply some sort of adhesive to the bead area of the tires before they mount them. Is it possible your shop did not?

Hi all,
The tires are 265/75/16 at 55 PSI and are on the stock aluminum rims.
All my driving is normal.
I've had them slip up to 12" around the rim!
When they first installed them they didn't use anything but I had them remount them last month and they used what they said was bead seal but I think it was just tire patch glue.
Another Goodyear dealer says he can glue them with some sort of black glue.
I'm going to let them try it on my old tires before I pay for the new ones.
It may just be because of the tires I'm using.
The Wrangler MT/Rs have a very stiff sidewall.
Again, I think it happens to a lot of people, they just don't catch it because they have not marked their tires.
I've read so much stuff on here about vibration problems with the X I just wonder if it has something to do with the stock aluminum rims that most of us still have. Some tires types may slip. I know my Steeltex tires did not slip but these MT/Rs do every day.
I have been told that Chevy has sent out letters to the tire dealers advising them to glue the tires on the Vettes with aluminum rims.
I may just have to go with another tire.
Too bad since I can buy the MT/Rs for about half price.
Thanks,

I dont buy this for one minute (slipping tires on rims of a truck) Folks, we have a troll here, probably the same guy that posted as Bendover something with a world of problems that only God could create on his X. This is probably peter puck or someone. Send this clown on his way (we know where he came from)

Now wait a minute, Gearman . Just because you haven't seen something doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Tires slipping on the rim may not be a common problem, but it is well known to tire engineers and good tire shops.
It's usually due to tires or rims manufactured slightly out-of-spec, but might be related to too much of some type of lubricant used when mounting the tires on the rims. Obviously, it will cause a perfectly balanced tire and wheel to gradually become out-of-balance, and consequently cause vibration, just as if the tire was never balanced.
I understand it can be fixed with a certain type of bead adhesive. Personally, I would only try it once, then replace the tires, if it didn't help. |

Gearman you are way off base.
This is a true story.
Why would I waste my time if it wasn't! If you would like to call my Goodyear dealer I'll be happy to email you his number.
And your response just confirms my believe that a lot of owners have this problem and blame it on something else.
Take a look at the photo I just put in my profile. This tire has moved about 1 in. They have moved as much as 12" at times.
I seen tons of reports online of owners that have to keep rebalancing their tires for no known reason. This would explain some of them.
Why would a balanced tire all of a sudden go out of balance before any major wear?
Thanks,

Thanks David,
I know this sound like an odd problem but it's true.
I wish it wasn't.
I have $700.00 in tires that have been out of balance since new and are just about worn out at 13K miles.
And Goodyears offer to replace them for about $400.00 is not fair.
Most owners get about 30K out of MT/Rs.
They will be remounting my old tires this week with some sort of glue.
I'll repost the results.
I was just hoping someone would know what type glue to use.
I know the CJ5 guys glue them on all the time because they run these tires at about 5 PSI.
But none off the Dallas tire shops have done that.
Mark your tires guys, then if they move you'll know it. It could save you time and money looking for something else.
And no, I'm not in the tire marking business!
Thanks,
SRO2000X

Don't rule out the impossible,
It could be a lot of things. When I was in my late teens my brother and I would place a drop of oil under the neighbors Porche about twice a week. Right under the engine on his painted garage floor. It drove him completely nuts. I bet his mechanic was sick of him asking questions.

Hi The X Family,
That's a great story! I love it!
I found a post from someone else with the same problem.
A Goodyear engineer responded to him saying it does happen and its ether defective rims or tires.
I'm going with tires since my Steeltex tires didn't slip for 39K miles.
I also found a Yokahama service letter that says not to use a silicone based lube when installing the tires because it can cause slipping.
Thanks,
SRO2000X
