Hi all,

Im thinking of going to a taller tire to fill out the wheel wells.
I have the stock 265/75R16s now.

Will this increase milage?
Will it harm handling by making the truck more mushy?
And can you recalibrate the speedometer for the new size?

I need an AT or even a mud tire with very good pucture resistance.

I have the Wangler MT/Rs now.
They're very tough but they slip on my rims so I'm looking for something else.

Any BFG AT KM users out there?

They seem to be similar to the MT/Rs but maybe they wont slip on my rims.

Thanks,

SRO2000X

I had a set of 285 BFG TKO's installed a few months back which seemed to fill the front fenders

If you get taller tires, but NOT wider tires, and drive a lot of highway miles, then it is, theoretically, possible to get better mileage. The catch is that a 285/75/16, for example, is taller, but also wider, therefore increasing rolling resistance and decreasing mileage. I did not notice any mileage difference when I got my 285 tires.

If you pull a trailer a lot or carry very heavy loads, the slightly softer sidewall may make a difference. It will be difficult to tell in all probability.

Yes, so I've heard. My 285 tires don't seem to have changed my speedo much. If anything, I am now closer to the actual mileage.

I like my Coopers. They do make a more aggressive tire. See www.coopertires.com for more options. Good luck.

Hi CHPMustang,

Did you change rims?
The 285 need a 7.5 in min rim width.
I think my stock Ford rims are 7.0 in.
I havent found a larger tire that would work on 7.0 in rims.
Is this right or am I off on the rim size?

Thanks,

You will have no problem runnig 285`s on your stock rims. Just put a set NITTO`S 285-75-16`s on 6" chevy, notice......small print, with no problems. Check out NITTO`s, you might really like them. Better tread pattern, less noise, better ride, and about $30 or more cheaper.

Hi All,

Goodyear just payed about 2/3rds of the cost to replace my 265/75R16 MT/Rs with a new set of 285/75R16s MT/Rs.
They fit perfect and ride very nice. I now remember just how quiet these tires can be when they're in balance and not worn out.
I really dont think they're any louder than my old Steeltex ATs.
The look MUCH better than the stock size too!

Time will tell if they're going to slip.

Thanks,

I have BFG 305/75R16 A/T's on my stock ford rims (4x4 7.3L PSD) and have had great results on and off road and while towing. I had to have them trued around 20k into them, but have well over 40k on them now and more to go. I do not get any rubbing on floor boards or fendwells and overall ride comfort has improved IMHO. The tallest tire you can recalibrate the speedo to is the 305 I believe which about equal to a 33" tire if it were on an 8 inch rim. Will probably replace with the same tire whenever these things wear out.

Without a lift I would go with the 285's. Tires I can personally recommend: BFG AT KO, Michelin LTX if you do mostly highway and Bidgestone AT REVO's - not the standard AT's. Recently put a set of these on a 1997 Lancruiser and they are incredible. I have heard great things about Nitto's, but have no first hand experience with them.

2000 XLT Premium, V10, 4.3 LSD Rear, Edge 4.5" Hanger Lift, Landyot Radius Rods, Hellwig Sway Bar, Dual Bilsteins, 295 75 16 Nitto AT's, Billet Grill, Lengthened and Balanced Driveshaft, Hella 450's, Insulated AC Lines, Modified ZooDad, Husky Liners F to B.

Without a lift?????? why? if you run 305's on stock rims they will equate to a 32" or so tire and not rub on a 4x4 PSD X with no lift. I have not ran into any really odd tire wear either because of the 305 being on a stock width rim.
