Yesterday I used 4-wheel low in order to negotiate my trailer in the sleet and snow. Today, I go out and it will not come out of low. I have used low before with no problems. I've tried all the simple things like backing up, switching to hi and 2-wheel, locked hubs when backing, etc.

So now what do I do? The nearest Ford dealer is 20 miles. I don't want to drive that far with it in low.
So... is the switch electrical or vacuum? Where is the connection to the tranfer case? Is there something else I can try to get it out into 2-wheel?

Thanks

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but did you put the tranny in neutral and keep your foot on the brake when attempting to shift out of 4WD-Low?

Landyot, my father always told me that no question was stupid unless it was asked twice.

Thank you! That did it. I have had the X two years and have used 4-wheel (hi & lo) many times and I have never done it that way. I guess I will have to take out the owners manual and read it again.

Thanks again....

Well, mine is stuck in 4wd low again. The first time it went into the dealer and warranty covered it. Took them a whole day to diagnose and had to order some part. They thought it was in the wiring.
Last night, went in for new tires, and I bet the guys put it in 4wd to get it up on the lift. First time I have seen a drive on lift that you can use a secondary lift within the lift to get her up in the air by lifting the axles.
When they pulled out, it would not come out no matter what I tried. So, fortunately the dealer was just across the street.
Will see what the results are this time. Warranty is almost out, so glad it happened now!

Can't wait to get it out and try the new 285 Michelins. They felt great on the short drive across the road. Those, with new front end alignment and the new Landyot radius rods will be the ticket!

By the way, and I said it before, the radius rods were excellent on my trip last weekend. 6 hours of interstate driving and I never had to move the wheel. Hold it steady and the X just went straight like it should have in the first place.

Well, got her back today! Dealer was great. Fixed in one day! Problem was a PVH Solenoid. It is under the hood next to the battery. Just another electonic device that crapped out! Glad they had one in stock!

Well, here I am again. She get stuck in 4X4 low once more! Went over to the dealer to get my Front Sway Bar end links and figured while I was at the dealer, let me try and see if the 4X4 will operate properly.
Well, it didn't! So into the service bay I go.

This time, they got different codes. Had it for a few days and finally replaced the shift motor on the transfer case, then test drove and had new codes again....they were the relays, so they replaced both relays and it seems to have fixed it.
Will go over to the dealer in a week or two again and try it in the parking lot. Thanks god for the warranty! The dealer has been great and is really serious on trying to get her in and fixed. They had to call Ford this time since they couldn't figure out why it was doing what it was doing I guess!

By the way, the Front Sway bar links, On the fordparts.com site, they showed up as $21 on one site, and $28 on another. I took a printout in to the dealer and the guy I was working with at the parts counter is the one that was maintaining the web site. He said that the site had a mistake for those parts. They were really $68 each. I think the passenger side one was a dollar or two more. I said, dude, lookey here! Your web site says $28, and the other ford web site is $21....what gives?
He said that the parts are different from each other. The web site has an error making you think they are both the same, so for sure the web is wrong and needs to be fixed. However, I can deeply discount for you due to the error. So I got them for $48 and $49 each.

I put them on this am. Both bushings were exposed since the rubber membrane was rotted out and allowing dirt/sand, etc into the grease, so it was a matter of time before they became a problem.
One more thing worth mention is that the passenger side...you have to drop the Y Exhaust pipe in order to get the bolt out! With some PB Blaster, the exhaust flange nuts/studs came out without too much trouble and I was able to slide it to the side enough to get the drop link swapped out!

Ok, that was my day today playing with the big toy! Later!

The PVH (Pulse Vacuum Hublock) solenoid, only controls allowing a vacuum to be put on the hoses going to the front knuckle or spindle that passes the vacuum to the hublock. This solenoid is mounted on the inner passenger side fenderwell next to the vacuum pump on a diesel. Disconnecting the electric connector to this when you are in 2H, can allow you to use the dashboar ESOF control to switch into 4LOW, but since the hubs stay unlocked, you are functionally in 2LOW, for backing up or crawling around thru a campground or parking area, without building up excessive heat from the torque converter, especially when in reverse with a 4R100 automatic transmission.

This has nothing to do with the transfer case going into 2H or 4H or 4LOW. That is performed by an electronic stepper motor mounted on the side of the transfer case.
