Just bought my first X (upgraded from a 99 Exp) and it's a 2003 6.0. I sporatically get a "rattle" from somewhere in the back. The best way I can describe it is as if your carrying a 1/2-3/4" sheet of plywood in the back and each time I hit a bump in the rode I get what can be best described as the plywood bouncing. I now this a tough one for ya but those with a good imagination will figure it out. I'd like to think that some how the back section is just jumping on the frame rails but it's just a little aggravating. I haven't a clue how I could "shim" the bed if that inded is the issue. As it's still under warranty I could try to take it in but "funny noises" typically don't fair well when you go to a dealer.

Any thoughts?

Couple things I'm sure you already looked at, is the spare tire on the left side and the jack on the right side. Make sure both are not loose causeing your noise. Another thing (just pulling this from my hat) check your third row seating making sure it is latched down. Yes, I will agree that strange noise can cause you and dealers alot of stress when you take the X in. I know some one from here will have the answer.

I have the same problem. It seems to me that it is coming from inside the left passenger door, but I might be wrong. My wife if going to take it in on monday for them to fix a couple of items and that is one of them. I'll post what they find.

Similar problem. It turned out being the spare tire for us.

Not sure what it was...
but my dealer found my rattle inside the pass side near the rear heater exit
just in front of the third seat...

Had to ride around back there so I could isolate where it was coming from...

When I bought my 2002 Excursion I had one of those funny little noises as well. It ended up bring the roof rack, but it sounded like it was coming from under the second row seating. Very strange!!
One of the adjustment clips on the roof rack was really loose. All is well now!!!
