Guys,

Does anyone else have a loud humming sound at around 1800RPM? I've noticed this on an other 2003 X I test drove too. I thought maybe it was the new power train (6.0 L PSD and torqshift). It's a pain when your cruise control is set and the engine sits around that RPM. Has anyone found a fix, or is this just the nature of the beast.

Cheers

Clayton,

I have a 2003 X V-10. I get a HUMMMMING SOUND at 35 to 37 MPH (in OD) and it appears to be when the Converter locks up ie: direct drive. If I Lock out the OD the sound is not there at that speed. There is a slight repeat of this HUMMMING at 48 to 50 MPH in OD - it's not there with OD locked out. I believe the sound is an inherent RESONANCE of the Converter/Transmission. Ford has in the past hung weights off of the extention housing of some Automatics and rear axles. You will see such a device right above the rear axle and attached to the body on current X's.

At this point I don't know the fix - for now I try to stay away from those speeds or lock out the OD.

I love my white X, Richard from Knoxville,Tn now in Bradenton, FLA

I asked the same question right after i bought my '04 6.0L PSD. I forgot who mentioned it, and I'm frankly too lazy to look it up to give proper credit , but I was told that it is a known condition. Supposedly the turbo has the resonance, and it is transmitted through the mounting bracket to the frame. No fix then, and I don't think there is one yet.

Now I'm gonna have to look it up. You got me curious again.

Please see the following link. It may be the problem.

P.S. I have the same problem and have a V-10. It is just too cold and wet to check it out.

Thanks for the info everyone.... but it sounds like this was discuss back on sept 16 2003. sorry for dragging up an old thread I spoke with my dealer today and no sign of a fix.

Here's a clip from the old thread:

"THE drone @ 1800 is a common complaint - Ford is supossedly working on a new turbo bracket or such to stop the resonance/oscillation that occurs at that rpm... " quoted from JohnBoy

i get a loud hum at that rpm as well. when i called flowmaster to ask which muffler would work best on my 00 v10 x i got an interesting reply. the guy said he would not put a flowmaster on my x. he said to many compaints about a loud resonace hum around the rpms you are talking about. the flowmaster makes it even louder.

Aha! the polt thickens. I've had a more than a few people comment that it sounds like an exhaust issue as well. One of those, an employee of mine, was a dirt track racer for years. I tend to trust his opinions on strange noises from vehicles. He guessed correctly on a noise I had in my '97 Expedition, which ended up being a cracked EGR tube. It took the dealer 3 tries to find that one.

Interesting, if I had to place the sound I would say it's around the middle of the truck. It's not from the engine area......Hey JohnBoy do you have this problem?...if our theory is right your straight pipe exhust should hide this problem. I know the straight pipe is louder but does it scream at 1800RPM?
