Well, it's official.... News Firestone has recalled the SteelTeX tires used on the 2000 to early 2003 Ex. They will replace them without cost to the owner.
Although I never had any trouble with mine, I threw them in the garage when I put on the Dunlop Rover ATs. Looks like I will have them reinstalled and get a free set of Pirelli Scorpion ATs.

Hmmm ... looks like the time is right for me to trade in the old Firestones towards a set of Nittos ... been sitting on a set of new 8" wide Panther wheels for a few months now. I realize the news-site lists specific replacements, but they'll have to offer some sort of compensation if those replacements are unacceptable to the consumer. I'll wait a couple weeks for the official notification. |

If you look at my post (the first in this thread), you will see the word NEWS just before 'Firestone'. Click on that, it's a link to the firestone press release.

From what the Ford dealer told me today all of the Lt265/75/16's steeltex firestones that came stock on your x 2000 - 2003 will be replaced.
The recall is all inclusive for this specific size and type tire regardless of serial #. They stopped making them at the end of last year.
I hope he is correct. I have an appt. with the dealer Tuesday, I will let you guys know what options they offered me. |

The recall involves 265/75R16 Steeltex load range "D". Although I think it involves all Ex's, your Ford dealer does have a VIN list to verify. Your Ford dealer can replace with Pirelli Scorpions or B.F. Goodrich Rugged Trails (4X4 only). Your Firestone Dealer will replace them with another model Steeltex or a Bridgestone. Replacement tires are en-route but may not be available yet. Check the Firestone web site for further details such as the exact makes and models of replacement tires.

P.S. All replacement tires are load range "E". |

Correct me if I am wrong, but it is my understanding the recall involves only Steeltex AT, not the Steeltex R4S. I have the R4S and wished they would recall these and give me a 6ply tire that rode a little softer than the R4S stone wheels.
BTW - does anybody have a suggestion on how I can take some of the stiffness out of my truck? I have a 2002, v10 model. |
