I have a 2000 X Limited V-10. I bought it because I'll be needing to haul a 7-8000lb boat (30ft overall) for over 200 highway miles one way. The argument is on with some friends that I should have bought a 3/4 ton Sububan with a V-8 454 to do the job. I say no way. Can I get some back up here? |

I tow 5,200# of car trailer with my V10 and hardly know it's back there. Every now and then, I scare myself when I see a car so close to my rear window through my interior rear-view mirror ... only to realized this dummy is pulling it. (I sometimes forget it's back there). I used to tow it with an '87 F350 crew-cab, but it only had a carbureted 351ci / 5.8L V8 ... and it struggled a bit with the trailer ... let alone getting only 7 or 8 MPG (I get around 11.3 to 11.5 MPG with the X over a variety of terrain ... combination hills and flat). I'm very pleased with its towing ability. |
Dan,
I have never towed anything with a chevy 454 but you used to see a lot of them in large motor homes. Most of the large motor homes now (that are not diesel) are Ford V-10's. No judgement here just info you can draw your own conclusions.
I just returned from a 700 mile one way trip with my 2003 V-10 pulling my 33 foot 9300 # Travel Trailer. I love it on the road and thru the mountains of Tennessee and the Carolina's. I have to keep reminding myself - don't forget your pulling your trailer now. I get 9 -10 MPG at 55 -62 MPH.

Not really... The 3/4 Burb of that vintage was rated for 10K. (properly equipped.)
New ones are rated at 12K.

Just out of curiosity, what is their argument? What makes the V10 X so inferior?
The Excursion will no doubt be heavier than the Suburban, which will make the towing experience a bit more pleasant. It's nice when the trailer doesn't beat the crap out of the tow vehicle.
I'm really not up on the specs of either motor. My guess is that the V10 is a little higher in HP and possibly the same or a bit lower in torque than the 454. I would have to put my money on better fuel economy with the V10, particularly when not towing anything.

Old 454 is 290HP & 400lb. ft.
If y'all look back in time, you'll see that Ford went and designed the Excursion off of the old Burb. Right down to the spare tire in the back.
They "improved" everything over the old burb. So, the old burb was their (obvious) target. If you look at the old specs, the Excursion bested the old burb in just about every contest. Ford basically kept their target low. But they didn't come up with ANY innovations with the Excursion. Hell, they even copied the Astro van with the tri-fold rear doors!
The Excursion was almost like a bettered up Burb...until the new burb was launched a year after. Now, it didn't have the PSD and I would argue that the V10 is far superior to the 8.1L but new Suburban 3/4 ton bests the Excursion when it comes to creature comforts, ride, tow capacities (not necessarily ability) and resale.
Still wouldn't own a burb though...

I've owned both and I think they are very similar, it's all a mater of taste. |

I'd second that. We have a 34' Airstream tri-axle that we pull with the X. I bought the trailer, then looked for my tow vehicle. The dealer we bought the X from had an '01 'Burb 3/4 sitting right next to the Y2K X Ltd. I really didn't have a preference. I bought the X because it was $3k less, had 15k less miles, and was in over-all much better condition. His prices for both were well below the offerings from any other dealers locally. I bought the X for $23k.
Our trailer tips in at about 8500lbs loaded. The X tows it really well. I sometimes wish it had about 20" more wheelbase, but other than that it's an EXCELLENT tow vehicle. The single area it holds over the 'Burbs when towing is the thousand pounds more that it weighs. That's important when you consider that your trailer pushes you. You do things to limit that: sway control apparatus, brakes on the trailer, etc. etc., but the bottom line is that your trailer inertia pushes you. The interia of a seven-thousand-pound X is more difficult for my 8500 pound trailer to push around than the six thousand pound 'Burb. That's a weight increase of 17% moving from the 'Burb to the X.
The bottom line is that your X will tow every bit as well, if not better (solely because of the weight) than the 'Burb.

Dan, I have never towed with a 3/4 ton Burb, but I have owned two 1/2 ton Burbs and now the '02 X. Still towing the same trailer with all three vehicles. Both the 1/2 Burbs were at their weight limit when towing my trailer with the wife & kids aboard the truck. Over both 1/2 tonners I went through three transmissions and one engine. Ugh.
So far this is apples and oranges, since you weren't really talking about 1/2 tonners. But here's the point: What the other guys say about the extra weight and wheelbase on the X over the Burb is true - the larger/longer/heavier tow vehicle makes it a better towing machine. No, it doesn't handle as well as the Burbs, but that is because Ford still puts on heavy duty axles that will take the workload over time. GM's independent front suspension is nice and carlike, but not as heavy duty as the straight front axle that Ford uses on their 4X4s. I don't think that the 3/4 ton Burbs are as truly heavy duty as the X. As one member here stated, they really should have named the X the "Super Duty Crew Wagon" since it is basically an F250 with a permanent, air-conditioned cap installed.
My trailer 'tail' used to wag the Suburban 'dog' pretty badly, and (relatively speaking) I hardly know that it's back there now while towing with the X. I also get much better mileage towing with the Powerstroke diesel. Went from 8-9 mpg with the Burb to 10-12 with the X.
I still own one 1/2 ton Burb and do like it a lot because it is much more 'carlike.' For road trips without towing, it's wonderful. Needless to say, since I own both, I don't get into the "Ford vs. GM" debate, but I sure don't use the Burb to tow any more. The X is a much more work oriented machine.
I think you made the right choice. Enjoy!
Gary

Doesn't the X run an independent front suspension? |
