Hi everybody. I have been reading these posts for a while, and this topic has got me in knots! I have read a LOT of responses to this problem on other threads, but most don't apply to my X. PLEASE HELP!!!
My 2000 X V10 4x4 has had a clank (or POP) sound under the drivers feet, which is getting WORSE!! It doesn't happen when parked and just turning the steering wheel, but it happens whenever there is any body roll during slow driving, uneven surfaces, turning on a bumpy road, etc... It ONLY makes the sound during situations where the track bar would be under pressure (keeping the axle from lateral movement). BUT, I have completely disassembled the track bar and everything is 100% fine. The pop/grinding/clanking is just under the drivers feet, or behind the front left tire.
Some threads here say that it may be a REAR sway bar, but I do not have a rear sway bar. Or, a body mount bushing, but the sound is a sharp clank of a hammer (or grinding) rather than any "shifts" of the body! ALL the shocks have been replaced, and all shock bolts are tight. Sway bar links are tight, as well as sway bar bushings. I am OUT of options! PLEASE HELP! I hope there is someone out there that has solved this problem, and knows the source.

The knock I had on my 00 X, It was the wheel hub going out. I could move the wheel top to bottom about 1/4" it took the tech's 3 times in to find it. try that. Good luck - Bill

Thanks Bill-
What do you mean you could move the wheel top to bottom about 1/4"??? Did you jack it off the ground, and your front wheel hub had play?

Sure Sounds Like The Track bar! Don't know what else it might be.

Thanks RottnDog, but the track bar seems fine. Driving it today, I really had my ear locked into the sound. It is really like a "grinding" sound, more than a clank. As if with EVERY SINGLE movement of the body or chassis, something is harshly rubbing against the threads of a bolt. Does that make sense? My gosh, this has got me so frustrated at this truck!

Check the rubber pads on your body mounts or a loose body mount bolt. The pads have been known to rot with age. I`ve known a few people with the same problem and if not the sway bar links it`s the mounts crumbling away.

Were there any events that happened just before the clanking sound arrived? (lift kit, tire change, oil change, accident, etc, etc)

I had the exact same sound & knock (mine was almost a violent pop) whenever I turned the wheel and went over a bump in slow motion (like a ditch or rounded curb). I had just had my lift kit installed so I had them figure it out.

The first thing I did was find a spot of road where I could replicate the problem consistently. The next thing we did was remove the sway bar. The pop went away, so we knew it had something to do with the sway bar. They re-installed it and torqued everything down and the sound was still there. They did some investigation and supposedly (this is what they told me...doesn't make sense though) there was rust on the edges of the swaybar rod bushing retainer (the piece that bolts to the frame) It was basically making it so that even though their torque wrenches showed correct torque, it really wasn't tight and would end up moving (popping) during a bump. They ground the sides of the bushing retainer down smooth & clean and re-installed and the noise went away.

There are only a few pieces to the sway bar and it's fairly easy to get off & put back on, so my suggestion is to just go through the process of elimination slowly but surely.

David- THANKS for your reply. I REALLY appreciate it. That's a great idea to find a place where the problem can be consistently duplicated. The sound has always been there, but it was quiet and just somewhat annoyaing. But, after the lift, it seems it gets worse by the week! I will start the process of elimination, part by part, starting with the sway bar (and the sway bar frame retainers). THANKS!

A pop under the drivers floorboard is the body mount located there. Its a rubber donut x 2 one above the frame rail and one below. I got resolution, as did many others by replacing the bottom donut. The bolt access is under the carpet. Pull it back and you'll see a rubber stopper in the hole. Don't get crazy trying to torque the things. The threads strip inside the mount easier than you would think. Ask me how I know. It's about a $30 part if I remember correctly.
