Saturday afternoon I was washing the (filthy) X and switched on the ignition to rewind one of my kids videos that he had been watching while I was doing errands.

Things got a little busy and I totally forgot to switch the truck off. I live in a pretty good 'hood so I usually just leave the key in the switch and lock the doors, which is what I must have done Saturday...and use the keypad to get back in the truck in the morning.

Needless to say, Sunday morning she was dead as a door nail. I put my little booster pack on it and she barely turned over. Then I got my wife's Suburban, hooked up the jumpers and tried it...still no luck..barely turning over.

Then I put the booster on ONE battery and the jumpers on the other and revved up the Suburuban a few minuts...STILL no luck.

Wife comes out and says 'call AAA dummy, you too proud? just like a man.' So call AAA and he rollls up on an F450 with utility body, of course with PSD. Was impressed at my PSD. He hooked up jumpers...no luck. Then he added his booster pack...no luck.

FINALLY, with jumpers and a PSD revving 2500 rpms on ONE battery and BOTH boosters on the other, she fired up!

LOL. Damn. I guess it's all the compression!

I'm going to try to get those batteries to last the through the Summer, but I will probably trash them before next winter.

Later.

Try that in the winter time and throw a little ether into the mix...not fun. Ether does strange things! Took a friend of mine and I 45 minutes of batter booster + jumper cables from my PSD X + revving + ether to get his '00 F350 PSD to turn over on a cold day that he forgot to plug-in on.

Its probably my misunderstanding, but doesnt the X have the same feature as the expeditions? the expo would shut of all power sources when it had just enough power to turn the motor and start.

I guess I was wrong, or maybe it saved 40%, oh well, i cant remember now..

have fun,
dx

Nope! No feature like that. The only thing it'll do is shut off interior lights if you leave a door open for too long. Otherwise she'll completely drain both batteries.

Very Odd.
I was able to get mine started well below freezing with just a little bit of gogo left in the batteries.
The head lights were dim to the point where all you could see was a red element. That was the result of my charging system having a ford special connection on the alternator.

One would think that with booster and another vehicle jumping you would have plenty. And you do.

Something very very odd there. It is possible that the jumpers were too light and could not supply enough current to over come the dead batteries and the starter at the same time. All you can do is put a charger on the batteries before you try to jump them to sort of fill them up before trying to start.

Yeah.. I know.. long winded.. sorry bout that.

Dave.

No Dave, not a long post at all...in fact thx for the info. I too, thought it a bit odd that they drained down like they did and was SO stubborn in firing back up!

I have noticed the SLIGHTEST corrosion on the terminals on both batteries. I guess it doesn't take much of this to interfer with a good connection. I'm gonna remove them and clean them up REAL good this weekend, and also I'm going to put a trickle charge on both batteries.

It's been starting up just fine since I finally got it jump -tarted a few weeks ago, though - but I have a sneaking suspicion that this might come back to haunt me come next winter.

If I can salvage the batteries for the rest of the summer I'll be happy - and I have written myself a note on my calendar for Oct. 31 - 'replace batteries'.

Thx.

I've had an alternator problem off and on for several months, so I feel like I am an Expert on jump-starting a PSD! I take Two 2-year-old PSD batteries with me to the school where my wife is always stuck. Using big high quality jumper cables - connect one to the PSD batteries and leave it there five minutes or more while it discharges into the X batteries. Take that one off and put the 2nd one on and it starts every time. Most people would not have the luxury of having an extra set of PSD batteries, but they haven't had service at the same rip-off Ford dealer that I've been fortunate enough to have right across the street from my neighborhood. I keep them charged up in my garage. I may parallel them together on a cart like the pro's use.

To address another point brought up, my 2000 X definitely has a battery saver feature that turns off headlights and interior lights when they are left on. I would expect that if the ignition is in the ON position the battery saver feature is disabled because it assumes the vehicle is running.

The batteries were discharged at a slow rate, taking them to a state of complete discharge 0 amps. the batteries need to be brought back to a completely charged state 100%, when you were jumping them all the amperage was going to bringing them back to a charged state, when you would try to start the vehicle and the batteries are still discharged the motor won't crank because all the amperage is going to the discharged batteries to bring them to a charged state, then whats left over will do the cranking as the batteries become charged more amperage is available to do the cranking and it starts. Dirty connections and cold also take away amperage, when batteries are completly discharged charge them first at a low amperage rate to get to a somewhat charged state and them jump start the vehicle with another. put the batteries back on a low amperage charge afterward to obtain 100% charged 1300 specfic gravity and about 13.5 volts.

That very same thing happened to me last September! Only my batteries were 2 years old and needed changing anyhow.

The first time I noticed things going sour was when I had to start up the X to leave work. As soon as I switched to the first position, I noticed that the voltmeter wasn't where it should be. So I switched the a/c off, it jumped back up and I was off. This was either a thursday or a friday. I dorve around saturday and things were ok, not great, but ok. Sunday morning, I turn to the first notch to let the plugs warm up. The WTS light goes out and when I turned the key......NOTHING! Just a bunch of clicking noises.

I called AAA and they sent over a truck thinking this was going to be a "jumpstart and go" sort of thing. He hooked up his battery booster and thought that would do it. As soon as I turned the key, it was sucked dry. He then hooked up his truck AND the slightly recharged booster, and still, nothing. It took two (2) tow trucks (one on each battery), a battery booster, and 45-60 minutes to get the X started. Once I got it running, I headed off to church. When I got there, I shut it off and restarted just to make sure that it would hold the charge. It did, so I went about my business.

When church let out, I went to start the X and made a serious mistake; I waited to start instead of just starting, Long story short, "the diesel master" (cummins owner) helped jumpstart me. It took forever because I left the key in the WTS postion inslead of leaving it off AND the cables weren't thick enough to handle the juice. I figured that out after the fact. (boy did I feel stupid ) To top it off, I killed his batteries. (yet another long story ) So ladies and gentleducks, let my experience be a lesson to you all. Always be adequately prepared jumpstart with the right smarts and equipment....
