I have a 00 X , 7.3 psd, Limited 4X4. I want to replace the original side view paddle style mirrors (power) with towing mirrors (extendable type). The question is how difficult is it to remove the old mirrors and replaced with the towing mirror assemblies, and where can I buy the towing mirrors other than the dealer? Any advice and instruction will be appreciated. JJ |

I see the mirrors on EBay on a regular basis.

Skip Ebay and go straight to the parts manager that sells them on Ebay. Scott Hart at Buckeye Ford in Ohio (do an online search for his e-mail and/or 800 phone number), or you can e-mail me and I'll give you his e-mail address (don't want to post it here ... causes spam).
Scott includes a wiring diagram for the T-T mirrors. It's fairly easy to figure out. You will have to run an extra wire to each mirror from the dashboard light switch if you want the type that has the integral running lights. I didn't bother with the wiring connection adapter, and spent more time soldering in some trailer-type disconnect-plugs than I did to install them in the doors. |

Called Buckeye Ford, and I was quoted by Scott for the set of replacement miirors (power and heated) of $ 279.00 + 25.00 shipping. Is that a good price?

James J -- To e-mail a forum user, simply click on their username to obtain an e-mail address (if the user has allowed others to see it ... and I see your e-mail address is not available). I don't have the part numbers for the T-T mirrors I bought. They are the remote-control / heated / integral-turn-signal / integral-running-light type that were selling on Ebay (from Scott) for $400 (shipping included). My local parts guy could match Scott's price, but the free shipping AND no sales tax aspect got me to buy from Scott. BTW, welcome to the forum. My old mirrors were the dog-ear style (I've heard some refer to the T-T as moose ear mirrors) with remote, heat & turn arrows. I like the turn signals on the T-T mirrors better because I cannot see them from the driver's seat when they're flashing. The running light feature is pretty cool, too. Also, I cannot say whether the price you were quoted is fair or not. |

James I just did this last week (twice because they sent me two lefts and I didn't notice until I did one and a half sides) I'll give you the abridged version of the instructions. Take the cap off above the doop panel right by the mirror(it just pulls off). Pull the two rubber plugs off right next to the plastic cap. Now on the door pannel pop the window controls pannel up, it too just pops off. Disconnect the harnesses to your controls. You will the a small screw now, take it out. Now pop the door light lense off. Now you see another screw. Take it out and lift the whole door pannel off but don't move it too far because you need to twist the light fixture out of the pannel. Now that's out of the way. Take the speaker out and unhook it's harness. Unplug the other two harnesses which connect to your mirror. one is small, rectangular and red, and the other is white and round. Now unbolt the mirror and pull that old piece of junk out of there. Do the same thing in reverse and be sure to test the power before putting everything back together.
BY THE WAY. I bought the non-oem mirrors and they don't have a defroster on them I live in San Diego so I could care less but if you live in the cold you might want to spend the extra 40 bucks for the oem version. Also keep in mind that the new ones are gonna give you a headache at first because they bounce a lot more than the paddle mirrors. Sorry for the lenghty reply but hopefully this will help...if you haven't already done this mod. |

Well I guess that's really not abridged! I forgot. Make sure you take extreme care not to drop a bolt when removing the mirror because I would imagine it could be difficult to find. GOOD LUCK!!! |

Daniel -- You said you installed non-oem mirrors, and you have "bounce." My Ford T-T (moose-ear) mirrors I installed to replace the paddle (dog-ear) mirrors do not bounce at all. Solid as a rock. Maybe you could tell us who made your non-oem mirrors so that others could avoid them (in order to avoid the "bounce.") |
