I did a bonehead thing last weekend. I had 3000 lbs of brick on a pallet loaded right on top of the axles on my trailer instead of slightly ahead of the axles where it should have been. All would have been fine except that I also had not quite clipped the ball lock down on the tongue of the trailer. Wouldn't you know it, I pull into my downhill driveway and the hitch comes off and the tongue of the trailer pokes through the fiberglass door! The damage estimate is $1300 which I think is stupid and outrageous. It is only a 6" diameter hole through the back panel. The door still works fine and no other damage was done to the window or the interior panel. This is the driver side rear door. Much to my wife's dismay, I may try to fix it myself. It's just fiberglass, right? I'll be danged if I can't fix it and sand it so smooth that nobody would notice a problem. I would have a professional do the painting because I've tried that before and it takes a lot of practice. I'll also be running by a cheaper body shop and tell them that I'm paying for it, not insurance, and see how that changes the story.
I could bypass this whole problem if I could find a replacement door. Too bad we don't have a commonly available vehicle. |

Wow, that sounds like something Clark Griswald would do!!!
$1300 -- wow. You'd think it'd be easier and cheaper to find a door from a wrecked Excursion from a junkyard or something. No 'yards in your area?

Fort Collins, CO? Do ya'll have any boat repair shops in that neck of the woods ... er, hills? If so, give them a shot at an estimate. |

Yes, my rear doors are fiberglass. So are yours! That's why they are so lightweight and swing with ease. It isn't anything like the old barn doors on a Suburban.
I like the idea of using a boat shop. I know I could get the doors painted, maybe even by the Ford dealer, to match Very Closely since the paint still looks new on the rest of the vehicle. I'll make a few phone calls and check that one out.
There is nothing structurally wrong with the door with the big hole in it. Actually, we're getting quite used to having the hole in the door. I should put a speaker in it pointing backwards at the deaf bum in the Honda Civic rice rocket behind me that is shaking my Excursion at the stoplight. (I also have a Honda Civic.) I also thought of putting a Darth Mar (what's that guy's name?) mask on the panel behind the hole so that anyone who looked really closely at it would get a surprise of an eyeball looking back at them. I could mount a spare tire on the door and you would never see the hole. |

Well, you learn something new every day. Sure enough, the doors are fiberglass. I had just assumed they are metal like the rest of the body. Thanks for the information and good luck with getting yours fixed.

I've got Ford's dealer price list for the Excrusion in front of me. Prices are for MY 2000-2002
Door assy. YC3Z7840011AA price $374.90, book calls for three hours labor.
The rear rear lift door is $524.28 and Fords glass is $1,471.82 and NAGS is $2,573.05!
Don't ever brake your rear quarter window glass Ford gets $3,170.05 for the right side and $1,047.45 for the left, wonder why the right side is so much more?
Ford's windshield is $269.92 and NAGS is $771.20, big price difference.
Got the price list on ebay very nice to have as it has repair time and diagrams of everything, think it was $7.00 shipped.

$1,300 seems a little high.
$400 for door $300 for labor at $100 an hour plus that may not include swapping inside door panels which would be easy to do. Figure $200 to paint at a paint shop. $900 anyways.
I'd just by a new door or put a big bumper sticker over the hole.
