Hi,
I'm new here, and I have been thinking about buying a used Excursion to replace my Dodge Durango that was recently totalled. I want the extra room, and from what I understand, the X doesn't get much worse gas mileage than my D used to. (I got 13 city, 17 Hwy).
What are some things that I should watch out for when choosing a used X? Any model years or engines that are more trouble than others? What are the common service items and expenses that I should be aware of. My other choices, besides an X are the Expidition, or a GMC Yukon or Yukon XL. I don't need the size or towing capability of the X, I just like the looks.
So far, I have only test drove one, a 2000 Limited, with a V10 and 80,000 miles. They are asking $17K for it. I can afford a little more, and have been thinking of spending around $20-$25K for a lower mileage vehicle. There is a local dealer with a 2002 that has 45,000 miles for around $23K, and another that has a 2001 with 35,000 miles for $21K, but it only has the V8.
How much acceleration does the V8 have compared to the V10? Does the V8 get much better mileage?
I'm sorry if my questions are stupid, but I haven't really researched the Excursions very much yet, and this looks like the best place to start.
TIA

If you are able to afford a little more then you may consider getting a 7.3L Diesel model - if you think a diesel will be useful to you. With regards to V10 v. V8, I am of the opinion the V8 is too small for the 7K+# vehicle and would urge you to stay away from it.
If you get the diesel, then do a search on this site for tranmission upgrades.

Excursions tend to eat brakes pretty fast, so check them. Other than that, every thing else is pretty standard maintenance stuff. The V10 will have more power than the V8 and will move the X along better. It will not get 17 mpg unless you drive down hill all the time. 10 to 12 mpg is average. The PSD (PowerStroke Diesel) will get much better mileage and is a good choice if you drive a lot or have something to tow. This has been a much debated subject and there is no absolute answer. Drive them both and see which one you like.

Welcome!
There are alot of experianced folks in this forum and most of the time you will get good advise and information. While I am NOT one of the experts, I can endorse this site from my own experiance.
I recently bought a 2002 XLT with 17K miles.. It has everything but heated seats and DVD.. I LOVE IT.. I have it for about 4 weeks now.. THe whole family likes it....I did a lot of research starting back a year ago.. and when the right one came along I bought it.. I looked hard for a PSD but couldnt find one I wanted.. I also looked at Suburban 1500, but liked the X much more based on interior room and looks as well as the V10 power and towing capactity.. While the 3/4 ton suburban is closer to an X, it was overpriced in my opinion. I bought the X for alot less than I could a 1/2 ton suburban of same year and mileage. Depreciation can be a good thing when buying used!
I am also doing some standard upgrades based on suggestions read here.. I ordered parts online since this forum also provided good feedback on cheapest place to buy... This includes rear anti-sway bar and new rancho shocks. Those all get installed next Tuesday.
Good luck with your search..

If you look really hard and don't mind higher miles you can find a decent 2000-2001 diesel Excursion. My wife and I found a 2000 Limited 4x4 black diesel X last fall for $20,400 after tax and license. The truck had 104K at time of purchase which spooks most that are not familiar with the powerstroke. Now the truck has 114K and we both love the truck. Remember resale value kind of sucks on these which works for you buying used. 55% depreciation after two years, but the diesel will keep it's value better than the gassers.
Good luck!!! If a diesel is not available opt towards the 6.8 litre versus the 5.4.

I have a 2000 X with the V10 that I bought used in 2001 with 18k miles. I have never regretted that decision. I typically get 12 mpg around town and 15 on the highway. I occaisionally tow a heavy trailer and the mileage drops to about 9. I would stay away from the V8, as I think you will be disappointed with the power in such a heavy vehicle. I have not had any trouble with brakes. I replaced the OEM brakes at 50K miles with rotors and pads from Applied Rotor Technology (ART) and I am very pleased with the results. I have had no maintenance problems with the vehicle at all. A few things that I would recommend .... MAKE SURE the lugs are torqued properly (over torqued lugs result in warped rotors), put aftermarket shocks on and a Hellwig rear anti-sway bar if it doesn't have one already (Ford added one to the X in '02 or '03).

Hello all, a Soon to be 2000 X owner (hopefully tomorrow, waiting on drafting instruction). ANy who, a lot of good advice, and the one I have been seeing in many posts on this great site is the Hellwig rear anti-sway bar. Is there that much play in the rear?
Thanks!

It's not really "play in the rear", it's body roll. The chassis was originally designed for an F250. An F250 has stiffer suspension and less body weight. The Excursion on the other hand has short suspension travel, "plush" suspension, and a heavier body. When you corner and don't have a rear anti-sway bar, she really tends to lean on you. The difference is night and day. You can take the big on and off ramps like a racecar with the sway bar installed! Well, almost.

I don't have a rear sway bar on my X, and I've never ridden in one that has a bar, but I don't consider the stock ride to be that bad. Of course I drive slower than a grandmother, and don't take turns very fast. If I put on a rear bar I'd probably like it and say "wow, what a difference", but I'm happy with my stock ride. If you've never had it you don't miss it.
