Looking for advise on some tires for 20" wheels. I like the Grapplers but I am worried about them lasting awhile. I have heard that they are good for 20 to 25k and since I drive that every year I would like to get at least 2 years out of any tires I pick out. I like the BFG AT's but that tread pattern picks up every piece of gravel on the road. Help!

What size tire are you wanting? Not sure if you are going big 4x4 style or low profile.

I have the terra grapllers on my Dakota, which is a lot lighter than the Ex, of course. They are great, grippy tires, but they are wearing really fast. That mileage sounds about right to me, maybe even a bit high.

Unfortunately, I'm not very well versed in what tires are available in 20's, my neighbor runs BFG long trail rather that the AT's, I think the tread pattern on them might better suit your needs. Except I doubt they make them in 20".

Not sure what sizes you're looking at but I know of several people who have put on military tires with great success.

They are all Michellin but in three different styles; XZL, XML and XL They come in the following sizes:
335/80R20 XZL
395/85R20 XML
14.00R20 XL

These things run great but a bit noisey since they do have aggressive patterns. However, I've seen these things last well over 40K miles.

Do a google search and you should pull up some hits. Another friend was trying to get a hold of the same tires but in a 16" size. Unfortunately those were hard to get. Not sure if it's the same story for the 20's.

Good luck with it!

I'd also like to know what size Nitto Terra Grappler supposedly has the poor tread wear. The reason I wish to know is I just dropped off a set of 305-70R16-E and four new rims for mounting and balancing. I had thought of selling the new BFG replacement tires Firestone owes me, but if the Nittos are not holding up in the wear department, I may have to rethink that idea.

I was looking at 305/55/20's and for some reason from what I am hearing from people all over the net is that the Grapplers are very soft and tend to wear out quickly. To add insult to injury tires with shorter sidewalls tend to wear out quicker than those with tall sidewalls due to the heat build up. The theory is that a tall sidewall will dissepate(sp?) heat better and a short one will allow that heat to build thus allowing the road to take more of your tread!

I have 285 60 R18 graplers on my Dakota, which while not Excursion sized, is no slouch either. 4x4, 360, quad cab, it's pushing 6000#. The tires are sitting at about 12k miles right now, I believe. Based on the wear thus far, I'm thinking I'll be replacing them by 20k miles at most. I like the tires, they seem to be a good compromise, gripping fairly well on and off road. Having said that, I will probably be trying to replace them with a BFG AT or something along those lines.

Thanks for the info, though it does not bode well. 20K miles is not much, even by performance tire standards. I got 97K out of some BFGs on a F350 crew-cab, and the Firebombs on my X currently have 73K miles ... and they appear like they'll last until 100K.

I have Nitto Terra Grapplers in 305/55/20 on my 2002 Excursion Limited. I have about 10,000 miles on them now and I can't tell that they are wearing at all??? They still look new to me. I believe they will last as long as my Goodyear Wrangler ATs (17" that I had on my old Expedition 50,000 miles)
