XMen, welcome to the site!!! You will love your diesel-powered X!

Black smoke -- yes, this is normal if you romp on the "Go" pedal, particularly if you're in a high-performance mode. Be careful not to get to be too much of a lead foot on a high-HP setting...you will want to do exhaust modifications to reduce exhaust temperatures sot hat you don't melt that precious turbo.

Enjoy the new rig!

Welcome,

the black smoke is actually unburnt fuel. As E. Long states you should have a bigger exhaust but also a bigger air intake. If you provide the engine with the means of more air to mix with the fuel, it will reduce the smoke and give you an additional 20+hp and lower EGT's. I have a Flip chip and even in 140hp mode not even a puff of smoke.

Be very careful when running the mode by itself. It will melt the turbo fan.

Yes, deisels will put out some black smoke and more under WOT... but here is what you need to do.

1) Have dealer double-check motor for correct operation (which it sounds like you did).

2) Look at the short tailpipe on your Excursion compared to a diesel F250 or F350 (notice how it is short and inside the quarter panel)???

3) I had dealer/Ford pay for a chrome tip extension due to my concerns of a constant dirty quarter panel and unsafe exhaust flow which I said would come up from the underside of the quarter panel.

4) How can the F250 & F350 have longer tailpipes and be designed right and not the Excursion???

5) All is well now and my exhaust tip really helps, as well as looking good.

6) There is NO reason you should pay for their design and safety defect (in my opinion).

Good luck,

Jeff

Jeff can you post a picture of your exhaust tip. I would like to see what it looks like on the X.

Please do not take your truck into the dealer with the programmer still installed. If they catch it they will more that likely void your warranty. Ford has been on a real mission lately to do anything that they can to avoid dealing with warranty issues with the 6.0 diesel.

This diesel preformance thing is a real addiction. Once you start you won't want to stop!

I can confirm this. Had warranty repair voided when my transmission died because I had a chip installed.

It's true, Ford will make note of the installed chip and keep this data on file under the truck's VIN. This means your warranty is reduced/removed and the truck's resale it also lowered.

Not sure if other non-Ford car company would check against the VIN for this type of data. I would think so, because I tried to trade in a Ford at GMC after a small fender bench and GMC knew about it....I guessing because it was filed under the truck's VIN.?!?

I also have the 1704 and yes, it makes lots of smoke in the HP tune. Still smokes pretty good with the Econ tune.

I'm at about 600ft and I've yet to see my egt's go higher than 1150* and that was wiht the HP tune and towing 7500# in close to 100* temps. The SC runs pretty cool but that makes sense when you feel where the power is. It's very conservative to say the least, on the low end meaning
