Hey everyone, glad to be back online but not under these circumstances :-(
My 2001 stalled yesterday about 50 feet from my driveway on my way home from dinner. I restarted it for about 10-15 seconds and then it died and wouldn't restart -- just cranks.
Oddly, the PATS light is flashing fast as though PATS had failed. I took out my trusty SCMT 1705 to read any DTC's and guess what? The PCM seems like it's dead -- I couldn't get any response from it via the SCMT.
After browsing around on the web I tried two things. First I tried resetting the PATS (key on until PATS light goes off, key off and out of ignition for 30 seconds, then back to try starting -- no change). Then I tried my spare key, no chnage. Then I tried disconnecting the batteries for 45 mins to reset the PCM and PATS. No go. Oh and I checked all fuses.
So now I'm stuck. My mechgnic (60 miles away, via phone) said it sounded like a cam position sensor, but then why would'nt I be able to read the PCM with the tuner? Is the cam position sensor covered by the powertrain 100k warranty?
MY guess is that the PCM failed, Is the fast PATS light an idicataor of that?
Ay help would be appreciated before I fork over ig buck to the dealer!

Scott,
I would bet that it's the cam position sensor. The exact thing happened to me...the X died, started again maybe once or twice, but otherwise just cranked and cranked and cranked. When I brought it in, Ford didn't know what it was and I had to suggest the cam position sensor to them becaues it did not generate an error code in the computer, either. They had to manually test the sensor.
Anyway, yes, this is covered under the $100k warranty. You'll have to pay the $100 deductible and nothing more.

The CPS is a good place to start looking. Mine died and the symptoms were the same.
There is a number of other posibilites as well. If it makes you feel any better, the 100 deductable is not bad compared to the $368.00 bill to diagnose and replace the Cam position sensor. For once. waranty payed off. Although, its not fords extended warranty.

An update:
Ford said that after they reset the PATS the PCM was bad so they are replacing it. They also said it's covered under my 5/100k warranty (which I did not argue with as I have 65k on the 2001 truck) but I thought the PCM was NOT covered--only internal engine parts. Any thoughts? Guess I'm getting a good deal?

Is that the extended warranty or the Powerstroke-only warranty?
I guess it makes sense since the engine cannot function with the computer. Usually it's the other way around. I had to fight the dealership when I had my cam position sensor replaced because they said it was not covered under either the 100K Powerstroke warranty or the extended warranty. They had to call Ford's customer service line to verify that it was an item covered under warranty.

I sure wish Ford would get a grip on their dealerships. After all, the dealership is the first door that the customer knocks on when he/she wants to ask a question, buy a vehicle or solve a problem or just to say Gee thanks or Go to hell.

Well, back from the dealer $350 lighter. The PCM went out due to a short in the wiring harness. They covered the PCM under the 5yr/100k warrany (although I don't know why but I didn't argue) and charged me for the wiring diagnosis and repair and a $100 deductible.
Glad I didn't replace the PCM myself as they fried the first replacement :-)
Also FWIW when I mentioned the CPS, the service writer told me the 5yr/100k warranty didn't cover that, so Dave, I guess the squeeky wheel thing works.
Thanks for the replies.

Go figure. It is. If it ever goes out on your X, have them call Ford corporate to have it straightened out. The dealership books are wrong. Doesn't really make sense that a cam position sensor would not be covered under the engine warranty. That was my argument and it prompted them to double-check with Ford corporate. A couple of the mechanics even said that it must be a mistake.
