I have a '02 X with 7.3L PSD. On occassions when I first start the day, when I leave for work the turbo does not kick in until I am down the road. This makes for a real slow start. Mainly noticed during cold months. Any suggestions? |

I had the same concern with my '04 6.0L. I took it in, and they said they installed the newest update and replaced a faulty EGR sensor (I think that is what they called it, I don't have the work order in front of me). The problem is still there.
When I take it back in, I'll ask them to replace the Idle Air Control, or IAC. I've talked myself into believing that is where the problem is. I'll let you know when I do that. It won't be for a couple of weeks, though. |

Jeff,
Welcome to the site.
How cold are we talking here? This has happened a couple times with a friend's F350. His 350 is getting up there in mileage and abuse and on a really cold Minnesota day, it just needs to warm up a bit. On the other hand, I've never had a problem...-10 is I believe the coldest I've run my X in.

both mine use to do it but it is factory so i was told, there is a sensor that detects outside temp and will dump boost out some port until the engine warms up, the do not want boost on a cold motor, sometimes while driving and at a steady cruise you can here it HISSSSSIng, both my 94 pick-up did it and so does my X untill it gets to operating temp, sometimes on really cold days it will do it the whole day....

Just how cold are we talking here? It is most likely the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve (EBPV) It is a valve that is located just behind your turbo and it closes partially when the temperature is cold enough and or the engine is cold. It will cause your motor to be sluggish when it is closed, but helps to warm the motor during winter months. If it is doing this during the summer the valve may have gotten itself stuck and you should have the dealer check it out. |

Jeff,
The guys are right the PSD will not boost when the engine is cold or very little boost. I'm willing to bet if it's cold enough for the truck to go into high ilde while in park the turbo is providing little boost.
Cheers
