Okay guys...... it's time to unload ALL the information you have about these subwoofer enclosures that fit nicely into the rear cargo doors.
(This thread is because CHPMustang has an AWESOME setup on that white Excursion in his gallery! It's near impossible to tell he has subs back there!!!).
I have researched this for a while now, and I have heard MANY horror stories.......
Either the custom-made box is impossible to seal tight because of the shape of the barn doors, or the enclosure is too small to have a decent sound. OR, the whole sha-bang rattles and creaks because the subs are mounted into fiberglass doors!
SO....... ANYONE with good advice for us, help us all out.
1) Does anyone sell ready-made boxes for the cargo doors?
2) Where is a good spot to mount the amp (other than under the rear seat?
3) Do you have much rattling since the subs are inside fiberglass doors?
4) can you actually HEAR them all the way in the drivers seat?
THANKS everybody! Keep up the great posts!

1)Not sure if anyone sells premade box or not. I have never seen one. You can see mine in my gallery. They are mounted in wood panel that has been sealed to rear doors.
2)My amp for rear subs is inside access panel in the rear just inside rear doors.
3)No rattle inside, outside there is a slight rattle. Of course I don't have ghetto thump either, just good quality bass for the surround sound. i gave up on really loud music years ago. Unfortunately not soon enough.....huh? did you say something?.....lol
4)My two 10' subs give plenty of bass for me, I can watch all my mirrors shake.
Good luck!!

I need to fix my setup as the panels need to be reinforced. Circuit city thought it would be a good idea to use the panel as a mount for the sub. After several years of opening and closing, the clips on the panels have given way, the seal they made has broken loose, and the panels don't stay on anymore.
I may need to order another set of panels (since the clips are pretty mangled), but all this really needs is a wood face for reinforcement so the sub can mount to the wood face and the panel can snap on the door like normal.
Fill the doors with that "cotton stuff" (nice technical term, eh?) to give the feeling of a larger box. This'll help with deeper base. The differences in size of the doors also gives a nice combo of both deep and tight base. I have 2 10" Alpine subs...they can bump if I want them to, but they sound great when tuned correctly. Not overly powering to the point where your ears will bleed.

Thanks for the Kudos there JD
Yeah that's Steve's Excursion from nearby Keller TX,him and a friend(in the audio sound biz) designed and built that set of OEM looking subwoofer enclosures.
On another board he inquired with our group if interested Excursion owners wnated to get together on a group buy of sorts, they'd just have to build em.
I don't know how tight the moderating protocol is here in this slot is but if anyone is interested I can give him a call to see if he wanted to do the group build again.
Just drop me an email if interested,my wife won't allow subs in our X but I'll do anything to help ya'll out to better the sounds and performance of other X's

Any group buy would just need to be run by/through me. I'd like to get a sense of what the pricing is and how much work it'll be to manage it on the site, what the time frame is, etc. Probably makes the mose sense to keep it among "us" (the FordExcursions.com crowd). I want it to be a successful effort, and not bured within a message thread that only a small percentage of people see.

Couple of suggestions. I did not place my sub in the doors. I used a tube subwoofer that I can take out easily if I need to. However:
1) You may want to line the inside of the rear door with Hush mat..it's a viscoelastic sound dampener that comes in sheetsnnself adhesive. Stereo shops should have some--different brands...this will really help with rattles from the bass and about anything else. I have it under every interior side and door panel.
2) those stinking clips are hard as hell to find. Don't bother going to an auto store--it'll just piss you off. However, here is the link if you or anyone needs more clips (which I reccomend)

OK just the address then darn it!

Yeah, I thought about a tube sub, but wanted 100% concealment (since my 04 just got broken into!). I want 100% concealment for security, as well as aesthetics. I would REALLY like the JL Audio Stealthbox that fits in the console. That's a great idea, but I hear they are over $500 (?) WITHOUT amp!
I completely agree about dynomat (sound deadening material). Good advice!
I'd be interested to hear what a group buy would cost for those rear enclosures CHPMustang. Thanks!
For anyone else with ideas..... would any of you recommend putting just ONE 10" in the larger door and the amp in the smaller door? I could run the wires beneath the carpet to each door. I have no desire to "thump" but want a full surround sound with highs and lows. You think one 10" would do it, and the amp in the small door?
REMEMBER... I am going for 100% concealment.
THANKS

I'd put the amps under the middle row seats (for concealment). Not sure if you have captain's chairs or the bench seat, but there's room under the bench seat. I'd be very hesitant about putting the amp in the cargo door because of the opening and closing and overall jarring the amp would be subjected to. Also, you have to run RCA's, power, and speaker cable into that door which would make for a rather significant cable bundle that needs to constantly bend to open/close the door. If it's just a sub, there are no sensitive electronics and just a couple speaker wires.

J-Douglas....I have to say that CHP's install is excellent! I installed my amps under the middle seat just as he did.(Rockford DB1000 and 900X). With placing the amps front to back it still allows me to fold down the seat with the seat belt pretensioner going down in between the two amps. My most recent addition is a 3 Farad Cap, WOW what a difference in the bass responce! If you check out my sig you will see some detailed photos of how I installed my sub in the rear door, upto the point prior to putting the leather on the wood. It sounded awesome but with 1000watts and 12" sub it sure was shaking the heck out of the exterior side of the door. I have since just placed the 12 in a 3/4" MDF reinforced box (sounds great!). But if you do not plan on cranking it up that much the cargo install is the way to go. I really love how CHP was able to completely hide the speakers behind the factory trim. I was unable to do that with the 12" Rockford that I used, just not enough depth. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions. RG |
