As I continue to spruce up my newly purchased 2003 Excursion I decided to buy the Line of Fire LED tail lights (www.premiermotoring.net/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_main.html?catid=1130). But I have a question.
The installation instructions recommend installing the lights with the temp above 60 degrees for at least 24 hours. I am in Chicago and it will not be 60 degrees for 3 more months! The concern of course is the adhesion properties of the double sided tape used for installation.
Sooo...should I worry about installing on a 30 degree day?? I guess if it comes off I can buy more tape but would rather not have an issue. Any help is appreciated.
And I do not have access to a heated garage, etc.
Thanks!

If I was in your situation I'd definitely wait for the warmer weather for proper adhesion
Dangit I have a heated garage but you're just abit out of the driving area
Once the line of fire light strip is installed you're gonna love how bright they are.

Thanks Bill.
Now I am really confused because someone else repled in another forum and said I should be fine and just heat the area with a blow dryer before applying. Hmmmm.....
I wonder what 3M would say (they make the adhesive tape).
Hate to wait 3 months but I don't want it bouncing down the road either!!

The other day I was motoring around in my wife's little "sports car" and even though bone dry, ibetween the tires being so cold and the road being so cold, it was like I was on ice when I floored it...
NO, it wasn't ice....
the point is adhesion and cold DO NOT get along well
personally, I would lean toward the instructions from the mfg...
cuz the poster isn't going to warrant the install !
and a hair dryer probably won''t warm it up too well and for long enough to get it installed.... and then there's the "coldness" of the lights....
NOW I'm mad, u have me thinking of ordering these again !

Go ahead JohnBoy place that order! Except it really sucks when you place the order and it is too cold to install for months!
Ok...I called 3M tech support and they are very helpful. They stated that the product does hold better when applied in warm weather because the adhesive warms and spreads therefore adhering. This of course does not happen in cold weather and it will not stick properly. 3M stated that if I installed the product in a 70 degree garage and kept the vehicle there for 24 hours...then exposed it to extreme cold the product will have about 90% of it's adhesive ability (still pretty good).
She did say that they DO actually recommend using a blow dryer on some of their tape for some cold applications but it is not the best alternative.
I have given you all this detail because a lot of truck aftermarket products use adhesive or double sided tape and it is good to know what the manufacturer recommends.
I think I am going to try to find a warm garage somewhere! Or if it hits 45 degrees or so in Chicago watch out...I will grab the blow dryer and head out.

Any heated parking garages near you ? may be worth a weekend day rate ....
or how about a layover with the significant other at a hotel that just HAPPENS to have a heated garage

I looked many places and ended up buying mine from a dealer on E-bay (he had many brand new ones) last week for $53 and $19.95 shipping. That $73 was well below what I could find at online stores for the original Line Of Fire light bar. It was delivered brand new in original packaging with an business invoice and company business card.
Question...I can also can opt to screw the light bar into the X instead of using the adhesive. When you open the split rear doors there is an area right above the rear bumper that is plastic. The plastic area facing outward (vs. the upward facing portion) is about an 1 inch long that spans the width of the rear and this is where I could screw in the light bar. Once again this area is directly above the rear bumper with the doors open.
What is behind this plastic? Can I buy four self tapping screws and screw right into this area? I don't want to create a problem.
Some help please....
Thanks.

You also have to remove the Armour all (or whatever you use) from the plastic you are going to mount the strip or it will never stick. I use Xynol (spl.?)3m also makes a great silicone remover. I had to do it 3 or 4 times and the 3m tape still became lose a week later. I screwed it with some self tapping drywall screws.
