I have a 2000 x 5.4l and I'm looking at different types of trailers to haul the atvs around we're thinking of getting a small toy hauler but our x towing capacity is only 6,200, if I add air bags will it bring my towing capacity up or is it engine dependant . Right now I have already up graded shocks to rs9000 rx adjustable. Thought of trading it in on a diesel x but the resale is crappy dealer only wanted to give me 8900 for it . Thanks

Bobby,
First, WELCOME to the forum ... or the X-Files. Lots of good info here as a resource for X owners.
Your question may have been better served in the "general discussion" forum. I tend to think of the gas engine forum as a place to discuss specific problems about the 5.4 & 6.8 engines.
Towing capacity is calculated from several sources. And yes, engine size is one of the sources. Towing capacity is also dependent upon suspension ratings, braking capabilities, and rear axle gear ratio. Your shortfall is the gas V8. I had an F350 crew-cab with a 5.8L V8 (351Cu.in.), and it was rated to tow only 7K#, even though the suspension & brakes were very heavy duty. The relatively small V8 and a 3.73 rear gear kept that rating low. And it did struggle pulling just 5,600#.
Air-bags may help with excessive tongue weight, but they will not increase your GCWR. Sorry. The 5.4L V8 is OK for most soccer-moms, but it is not known as a hauler. |

Welcome to the site Bobby,
You have several factors against you on your quest to tow anything of size. The biggest is your small moter you have 4.10 gears, 260 hp, 350 lbs tq on a 7500 truck is not good for towing. You will have enough for a utility trailer for the 4 wheelers, but you will not be able to get a big trailer. You can search for lite weight models but they will be around 23-25 ft..
V10 tow rating 4.30 gears 11,000 lbs
diesel 3.73 gears 11,000 lbs

You can improve the torque output (and thus the towing ability) of the 5.4 quite a bit by making the following mods: a) improve exhaust outflow: add low restriction muffler and headers. b) improve breathing inflow: add K&N (or other brand - Volant is good) intake tube/filter, MAF meter, and larger throttle body; c: add chip (but must advance to 93 octain). With those mods and Iridium plugs, I have driven 16,500 Gross Weight on an '01 5.4 w/ 3.73 rear end up every hill between Texas and Michigan 4 times - including some very steep grades in Kentucky Blue Grass Mountains. Of course its not a diesel and you won't win any races or any miles per gallon contests, but the 5.4 will not run hot and will not let you down. You may be surprised at how well it can do for you if you let it breath a little better than stock.
