I have a 2004 6.0 X and the steering is very sloppy and I want to know why????? I have taken it to the dealer and they say it is the nature of the beast. I don't feel like that is a good answer. So, I test drove some 2005 Dully's and stanard F350 long beds and they drive great.

Any help will be aprriciated.....Thanks

Hi
I have a 2001 7.3 4x4 Excursion and the dealer told me the same thing, I changed out the ball joints and aligned the front end and it improved it. Then I replaced the steering box with a Ford OEM Remanufactured unit, that one was worse, really sloppy, I returned it as defective, and replaced it with another one and wow I finally got a good one.
A ford tech that I met on line says there all junk! He told me that at times he has had to replace the remanufactured ones three times before he's gotten a good one.
So my advice would be go back to the dealer and SCREAM for a new one tell them the truck is WANDERING and tell them that Ford has had plenty of experiences with "sector shaft twists" and you want another steering box. They only have reman's so hopefully you'll get a good one on the first shot!

Jay Hanratty,

Did they replace under warranty? This truck of mine only has 10,000 miles on it so I know it is nothing wore out. Thanks for the info and I will try it.....

Hi
My Excursion is a 4X4 model and no none of my repairs were covered under warranty.
The wandering problem didn't show up until about 32,000 miles and I didn't identify it as wandering, and the Ford dealer was not the selling dealer ( bought it on the internet) so they just blew me off . The problem continued to get worse and once it had about 39,000 miles , I just started making the obvious changes per Fords recommended TSB's, Alignment, Ball Joints then a smal miricle happened, I got hit where the wheel got driven into a curb and that really did the box in. My insurance company paid for the new box and alignment and a few other things. It now drives like new again. Changing the Steering box was not a difficult job with the right tools takes about 2.5 hours.

Aaaaahhh, sorry can't help you but I have found a relatively simple fix for wander with the twin I beam front end in the 2wd versions.

Well guys I think it is fixed.....instead of tightning the steering box I loosened the box a good bit and now it drives good. What I think was happening is with it to tight it was getting stuck and you where fighting the steering being stuck and not wandering.

When you guys turn the wheel to make a sharp turn then let go of the wheel will it strighten up all the way by itself????? or does it still remained turned a good bit?
