I'm a newbie here. I;ve got all of five days with my '03 5.4.
Little detail... What is the the little flashing red light on my dashboard above the headlight switch? I assume it's related to the security system, but I find zilcho in the Owner's Guide referencing this light. It flashes whether it's day, night, truck on, truck off, it doesn't seem to change it's behavior at all, and it really irritates me!
What is it? And, can I switch it off, at least when I'm driving?
Thanks to the powers that be for this site and instant wisdom!

Hi John,
There is no red light above the headlight switch on a stock Excursion...it sounds like you may have an aftermarket alarm system. It should only flash when the vehicle is armed...that is, if it was installed correctly. Do you have an alarm remote on your keychain to activate/deactivate the alarm?
You can always pull the front part of the dash off and just pull the light out. The better thing to do would be to track down the type of alarm that is installed and bring it to wherever it was installed at so they can fix the light.

Sometimes I don't know why aftermarket alarm systems are installed in Excursions as they have the PATS in them, maybe the light is just a dummy light that just flashes and does nothing else,if that's the case I'd snip as Eric says

I've known people who go the cheap route and get a flashing light installed instead of a whole alarm system. These usually don't bother to detect if the car is running or not, because the whole idea is to make it CHEAP. |

I've got the standard issue fob just like what's shown in the owner's manual, and the security system functions just like they describe. But this little red light seems to be an anomoly... blinks all the time, truck on or off, system on or off... guess i'll do some diggin' and snippin'... thanks... just wanted to make sure no one else had it... |

A few wires, a relay, a capacitor. Key off... Blinker on....
That was my 7th grade final project. I got an A+ and moved that light to four of my cars!

And yes I have seen many aftermarket alarms that tie into the factory key fob.
