Hi everyone. New to the forum. I am looking at an 02 Ex Limited w/ 7.3 powerstroke. Given that information on the 02 is more limited on the web, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how much the trucks have changed over the last few years. Are there upgrades since 02 that cause better gas mileage, or some significant improvement? Did the 02s have any widespread issues? Thanks for any info.

Welcome Scott...
Most say the 7.3L is a proven engine...
I had an 02 7.3L X and the only issue I had with it was my dealer...
they would take a WEEK to look at the littlest thing....
and THEN still not fix it...
so it went back to them a lot... - it was mostly little things... but
so much so that when I popped the tranny that Ford offered me an 03 replacement....
I can say this, my new 6-oh doesn't get near the mpg the 7.3L did on the highway...
course it is a LOT quicker and i tend to use that quickness too much
good luck with it,
check the records and the Oasis report to see if anything is a concern to you...
to each his own, but my peace of mind is worth more than the small charge for an extended warranty...

I just traded in a 2000 X V10 for a 2002 X 7.3. What a difference in both mileage and power. The 2002 isn't fast off the line, but it better for pulling.
I'm very happy with my 2002.
Consumers reports rates the '02 as the best Excursion built from 2000 - 2004. Also, the 6.0L diesel has problems from release in mid 2003 through 3rd quarter of 2004 production. That's why I stayed away from a new one - plus a new one is just too much money. Need some left over for other toys.

Mark,
You are right they did have some problems with the new 6.0. They have fixed most and any X that was manufactured after 11/05 got the new upgrades. I'm not sure all that was involved but I know they upgraded a few things. My Dad has a F550 supercew and he bought his in early 2004. He pulls a 39ft fifthwheel and the turbo charger went out in it. I know for sure that was one of the upgrades. I just traded my 2000 4x4 XLT with V-10 in for a 2005 4x4 Limited PSD. My Dad talked me into the diesel. We love the X. I use to pull a 31 ft travel trailer with the 2000. It was a little of a strain on the v-10 in the mountians. Not to mention I only got about 6 miles to the gallon. Anyway good luck finding a X. You will be happy with the X.

Thanks for the replies. As it turns out, the dealer gave me a very sweet deal on an 05 Excursion Limited w/ 6.0. It's got all the toys, including the entertainment package. The dealer was very upfront with me, and told me about all the prior problems with the 6.0s. However, Ford is very confident those issues are remedied. I have been pleased so far, with a couple of hundred miles and a 14.8 mpg average. The guage needle has not budged past the "F", due to the huge tank and a 750 mile range. We'll see how the actual refuel stands up to the computer data.
I have always been a big duramax/ally fan, but this Ford 6.0 is very responsive. Overal, the Ex handles wonderfully, and I am very pleased. |
