Investigations I have done with a Ford dealer and an engineer at the axle Manufacturer reveal that no added lub or adjustment is required prior to 100k miles. Off road and axles that get submerged (sp? ie:under water) may need special attention.
The bearings in the hub are greased and sealed and should be serviced as an assembly and the needle bearings should get grease any time the hub is pulled out - hopefully not before 100k.
I will be looking for bearing numbers and will try to just replace the bearings when needed.

Bill,
I don't need instructions on how to re-pack spindle bearings of the conventional Timken tapered bearing type with tabbed washers or cotter pins.
My Excursion is a 4x4 with a Model 50 Dana Front Axle. These axles have a non-adjustable set of sealed bearings in each front hub and Ford says you must replace the entire hub to service the bearings. I think we can replace just the bearings if we can get the bearing data before we pull the hubs off the truck.
The "needle bearing" is just a cartridge type bearing that holds the axle shaft in place at the end of the axle housing just behind the hub. I don't need info on these bearings.
Why pay $300 for each hub ???? Your comments would be appreciated. |

I did have to go through getting my hubs changed to the tune of $500.00 per wheel. I was out on detachment and my Wife had it done at Schwab. In my initial investigation the guy at the ford parts counter said you could get the number off the bearing punch out the old and press in the new. I am kind of glad my Wife took it in, I wouldn't have but since she did.....
I have had my X up to the running boards in salt water , probably why it did that, and I would be interested to know how to grease those bad boys so I don't run into the same problem.
