I have had my 05 X for a few months now and tonight I heard something strange. When the vehicle was in drive and I was sitting still the engine sound would change. It would go from it's normal loud state to a quiet state. Whe I put it in nuetral it stayed quiet and not as loud as it normally is. Any thoughts on what might be wrong? I am slightly overdue for an oil change. I am at about 6,100 miles since my last one. [img]

That's probably one of two things...
1) you need the latest flash and/ or
2) your EGR is acting up...

I fixed 2 by unplugging my EGR.... er ah,
no I didn't do that.... you see, this oil can FELL on the plug and knocked it off...

yeah, that's what happened - I forgot....

When I first read this, I was thinking that maybe it was the A/C compressor turning on/off and creating louder noise. Just a thought.

As far as why it makes a different noise while in neutral, I would say because the transmission is not engaged into any gear so there's less load on the engine.

Anyway, thought I'd offer this up. If the A/C wasn't running at the time, then you can rule it out, at least.

Thanks for the suggestion. It was not the AC. i changed the oil and it soounds fine now. I don't know if it was just really dirty or what, but I will be keeping an ear to it.

Could have been the oil. But not necessarily that it was dirty. It may have been foaming. Foaming causes the performance of fuel injectors to be erratic.

All 6.0 PSD engines are very sensitive to oil level and oil foaming properties. When the oil is changed, it is critical not to fill it all the way with 15 qts. This is because about 1 - 1.5 qt. remains in the upper high pressure chamber when you drain it down.

Just a suspicion, but I bet the old oil may have been a tad "high" and may have started foaming during warmer summer runs? Or maybe there was a buildup of another contaminant such as coolant which could have contributed.

You may want to start a regular campaign of having oil sent for analysis. Good defense if the engine ever goes south. Try www.blackstone.com.

Hello, I am new to this site and a new ford excursion owner. I too recently had purchased a 2005 Ford excursion PSD in June 2005 and today have noticed the same symptoms you have experienced. The truck has less then 2000 miles on the odometer. I am interested if changing the oil resolved the problem and is the engine running quieter then before. I was able to record the sound it was making and upload a sound clip of sound for others to hear. Any other thoughts that would cause this? I sometimes think my PSD cackles loader then usual and is loader then some of the semis on the road. Is this normal?

I have been told by Terry Dyson
http://bobistheoilguy.com/terry.html
that the new 6.0 Ford diesel is extremely hard on oil. Shearing is the problem, so needs an oil that can stand up to it. As the oil breaks down the injectors get louder - sorta like a reminder to change it!

Red Line is tops, but expensive. Schaeffer Supreme 7000 15w40 is blended with top quality PAO ester and soluble Moly - stands up to the pressure well. Price is around 4 bucks a quart if bought in gallons. This is great value for the quality they build.

I don't work for Schaeffer, I just like their product line.

Here's JDM's sound clip.

JDM, start with an oil change. I would recommend trying Amsoil, too. http://www.amsoil.com I run Amsoil heavy duty deisel synthetic oil (5W-30) in my 7.3L Excursion.

Welcome to the club!
