Anyone had any experience with the Nokian Vatiiva tire? My local dealer has a great deal on some 285/75/16's. Being a name brand that I'm not familiar with, I'm a little skeptical. Afterall, the whole reason I'm changing is because the no-namer's I have on now won't stay balanced! Anyone have this problem before? Grease ball dealer I bought it from put them on for me and I was dumb enough to let it slide |

Yep, stock rims. Nokian is a Finnish tire manufacturer now owned by Bridgestone. Their website has a lot of good info, and they sound like a pretty innovative company. From my industrial background, European stuff is usually real good. I'd just hate to drop a wad of cash and get the same thing I have now...but the price is too good to pass up if they're any good. |

Reason I asked about the stock rims is that my tire dealer always mentions to me that Bill you know if you had 16x8 rims we wouldn't have to put as much weight on your 285's. My next purchase of 285's I'll definitely pick up a set of Eagle 058's to mount em on
The Nokian 285's are they E Load or D Load rated? I too like the Euro brands as I've had good experience with em on my Mustangs

(Anyone correct me)D Load I believe has 8 ply sidewalls and the E Load has 10 ply sidewalls which I interpret as stronger and for the 8k lb Excursion it's almost a must.
Ford specs the SuperDuty & Excursions with E Load rated tires.

The stock tires on the newer Excursions is:
LT265/75R16 load range E, max. load 3415 lb. @80psi
The tires you are considering...
LT285/75R16 load range D, max. load 3305 lb. @ 65psi
(Dunlop says it can be used on a 7" wide rim, the others recommend at least 7.5" wide rim)
These 285 tires probably have sufficient load capacity, unless you are putting such a great load on the rear axle that you have had to boost rear spring capacity a lot to maintain a level ride.
The rear axle assembly itself is only rated for 7,000 pounds.

I've got a set on my X. They are great so far! I put them on in Feb so I have been through snow without any problems and have run them in some heavy thunderstorms with out any hydroplaning. Can't say as I have been offroad with them. The tread looks very close to the Bridgestone Revo but they have many more sipes. There is this particularly slick spot in the road, when wet, on my way to work where the Bridgestones used to slide like it was ice when I would brake. These don't do that.
I have been very happy with them.
According to the dealer in my area they offer a 30 day test drive return policy. If you buy 'em and decide you don't like them within 30 days they will give you your money back. Also came with a life time of free tire rotation at this dealer. I believe it was $141 mounted and balanced.
And they do come in the E rating: http://www.nokiantires.com/newsite/tires_popup.cfm?id=36

Welll much to my dismay, my ride up to Northern Michigan was terrible. The shake that was in my truck before I installed the new tires is still there The tires look nice, so I'm glad I put them on, but the shaking has got to stop. I talked to my mechanic and he's thinking that maybe it's the driveshaft out of balance. I can't get over 70mph without shaking (not so much that you can't drive, but enough to drive me crazy). He suggested jacking up the back end and running it up to speed to see if it still shakes. He also mentioned a possible bent axle shaft...but I'd think that something would have to cause that as opposed to slowly appearing over time. Anyone else ever had this shaking that they can't get rid of? |
