I running the stock Steeltex R4S on my 4X2 and wanted to hear best suggestions on a new set of tires. Still on the stock rims. I would not mind something slightly taller and wider--but not much. I would also like a tire that is fairly quiet as well. I do not tow anything of any size. I tried the thread search but it got a bit involved--so if you don't mind suggest away!

Thanks
David

I tell ya, even though I only have 800 miles on them, I'm really impressed with the Pirellis that came stock on my 05. FWIW...

David,

Ford replaced my Steeltex's (due to the recall) with BFG Rugged Trail T/A's. I've been very happy with them. I was concerned that the tread life on them wouldn't last like the Steeltex's would, but so far, so good. I have 30,000 miles on them thus far and rotate them every 5K. They perform much better in rain and snow compared to the Steeltex's. I also like how they look on the X compared to the Steeltex's, too. Here are some pics. They are very quiet, too...the Steeltex's I never had a problem with being loud, nor do I have an issue with these BFG's, either.

We went from the steeltex model to the replacement Pirelli Scorpions last September they ride and control alot better especially on wet roads but overall a better tire than the steeltex.

I went with the Nitto Terra Grapplers AT again after I got 65k out of them. I also just put them on my wife's truck .

Just switched out my set of BFG T/A 295's All Terains mounted on stock rims for Michelin LTX M/S 285's. Great ride and tire noise improvement. The tread is not as agressive as the BFG's but the dealer said that if you want the best ride and noise improvement you can not beat the Michelins. I switched the BFG's after 30K on them due to my lack of rotation. The X seems to demand attention to a good rotation schedule.

David, were you not happy with the SteelTex R4S tires? Having a 2WD Ex, you probably do not go off-road, so do you need an AT tire? I thought the treadlife was excellent and the wet pavement traction wasn't bad. I replaced my R4S's with Dunlop Rover ATs because I deliver firewood and regularly drive on rough dirt roads. But, if I were doing just city/highway driving, I would stay with the Firestones.

My Dunlops will no longer pass inspection and I am about to replace them with the Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO, going up one size to 285's. I got 55K miles out of my Firestone R4S and only 25K out of the Dunlops. I was very disappointed in the treadlife, although traction (wet & dry) was very good.

Bruce-- I hav appear to be real durable.e no major grievance with the R4S tires except the sidewalls just don't hold up terribly well. I have around 30K on this set and I think I will replace them before the end of the year. I am not after AT tires as the 2WD is not designed for much more than driving over a field--like Tailgating at Clemson Football games I am leaning toward a Goodyear or Michelin alternative and just wanted some feedback.

Thanks
David
