I just brought my Ex in so that I could balance and rotate the tires. After they did it, I noticed a bit of vibration, not too bad, but there. When I brought it back to the store, they said the wheels were "chopped", and should be replaced. They could not say as to how the wheels got in that condition. The Ex is in good working order. It has new shocks, bolts are tight, good U joints, etc.... I put on new tires via the waranty. It shakes even worse than with the chopped tires. I have brought into the one place at least 3 times. I had them dynamic balance them in front of me. Two other stores also balanced them for me, and it is a horrible ride through 60-65mph. It has been aligned, has new shocks, good U joints, straight rotors. What am I missing here? Any ideas? Can a wheel be balanced with a tire that is out of round, or that may have a side wall issue? Going in for day 6 of trying to fix this. HELP

Did they say Chopped or Cupped ?
I've had cupped tires and it was directly related to the shocks not being able to completely handle the weight of the tire/wheel...
so it did minute bounces -
loading and unloading the tire enough to make the wear pattern up and down around the tire....
tried rotating front to rear to see if that helped ?
I would go back to when it first started and think what changed then ?
Good Luck - that's no fun !
Some tire shops can "shave" a tire back to round - but I'm not convinced of the value... yet

They said "chopped". I put new Pro Comp shocks on it before I bought the tires. The only real variable that was the same was Fred the technician that did them each time. The store even said he is careless. Now that I have the new tires, I need to figure out why there is such a vibration when there was not before. My wife and 15 year old daughter noticed the vibration if that tells you anything. Something happened with the tire balance, and replacement; but no one is fessing up to anything. Going to battle againg today.......

I had one store tell me this morning that I had a bent axel in the rear on the driver's side. I went to get a second opinion, and the second store said, it was the tires. Ultimately I had 4 new tires put on the truck. The vibration is still there, but nothing to the magnitude of before. Through 60-65 there is a perceivable shake. If I have a bent rim by only a little bit, is it possible for the vibrations to be felt that much or is a non issue? I saw with the new tires that one wheel had up to 3 ounces added on one side. Any thoughts?

I suggest you "search" this Forum for Driveshaft,Tires,Vibration, etc and look at what others have done to solve "vibration problems". |

Have you had any of the shops look at your driveshaft? It is possible that it either lost a weight or the slip yoke is seized. A bent axle shaft is a very far stretch as these are 3/4-ton vehicles and you would have to have some serious traction and torque to bend one of them. You may have the torque, but doubtful that the traction was there to bend one of the rear axles. How did the shop come to the conclusion that the axle was bent?

Thanks for the post. I did a little searching with this. I have read a lot of similar issues at 65mph, 70, etc... The drive shaft keeps coming up as a culprit. Without having to go to a specialist. What are some driveshaft diagnosing options? Trying to roatate it , move it up and down, back and forth... I have saw a lot about "x" amount of degrees and adding shims. An interesting and easy option look to be like marking the shaft where it connects into the axel and rotating it 180 degrees. I recently replaced a wheel, had the others checked for being bent or something, rebalanced and mounted. A lot of the vibration appeared to go away, but I can still feel it. My wifes backside is not as calibrated and sensitive as mine, and I definately feel a vibration or shake through 35mph, 60, and very much at 65mph. The shocks are new Pro Comps. The only possible issue with them is in the rear. The rubber bushings in the top of the piston where it attaches to the vehicle have some play. Yes, I am thinking about the shaft. I am just avoiding the dealer due to $$.

Also with the shaft; would I be able to visually see if a weight was missing? Where are they? I have no idea about the slip yoke being siezed. How would I check that? The dealer came to the conclusion of a bent axel from putting the truck up on a lift, putting it in drive and watching the back wheels wobble from side to side. Granted one wheel was bent, but the other was pretty true. I was not sure what to make of that technique.

Well, I got under there and inspected and tugged and pulled. The ring/weight that is on the shaft is huge. I did not see any sign of movement. As I looked at the front part of the shaft near the transmission spline, I noticed a 1/4 inch or less of clean shaft into the transmission on the transmission side of the shaft just around the bushing or gasket at the spline. I figure a little bit of play is fine there. As I inspected the front u joint, I noticed a little bit of black. I touched and came out greasy. As I turned at that point on shaft I could hear and see some movement. Is that normal? Is the front U joint probably bad or bad enough to cause vibrations through low and high speeds? Is this easy to change out. I figured I would do the front and back.
