Hey everyone,

Over the last month or so, I have had my vehicle stall several times. Three times on our vacation to Orlando, Fla. and back, couple of times on the way to work, and once with my wife in it (that I know of). Fuel filter was changed just before we left to go on vacation, and it has roughly 2500 miles on it now. The times that it stalls are when I'm sitting still, or in stop and go traffic. I guess the question is should I change the CPS and see if it stops, or take it to the stealer and check for codes. I've tried to keep track of the condition of the vehicle when the stall occurs, but so far there is nothing in common except the truck is pretty much at a stop. Thanks for any and all replies,

About 75% of the time the CPS won't throw a Diagnostic Trouble Code(DTC) so if you go into the dealer and pay to have it scanned there's a 25% chance the code will show.

The CPS can be had for a cheap price on ebay or can be purchased from Powerstrokeshop for $93

Thanks for the reply, Bill. I'll go ahead and install the CPS spare that I have in the glove compartment. Maybe I was misunderstood, but I thought when the CPS failed, the truck would not start again. That is why I have been hesitating putting on the spare. I guess it's still cheaper to do that than to go to the dealer with an intermittent problem that may or may not be able to be diagnosed properly . Thanks again

When my CPS went bad, my truck would not start. Had it towed to the dealership and of course it started and ran fine for about an hour. Drove it away from the dealership since they couldn't reproduce the problem and about a mile away, it died again. It was completely random. Didn't matter if the engine was warm or cold. My CPS died at 85K miles.

My wifes X was purchased at 104K miles. At 114K miles it wouldn't start on morning. After it was towed compliments of AAA it was started and pulled into the garage were the CPS was replaced with a $95 International unit. Less than a year later now with 124K miles the same thing hapened. Again a free tow via AAA and a free CPS from IH since the unit came with a one year warranty. At 148K miles now so far so good.

At 185K miles the first CPS was installed in the F250 by a diesel mechanic who failed to notice a burnt wire near the valve cover as the problem with the motor. Now at 200K miles I think the original CPS could have held up!

I get in trouble all the time from my wife but you can pick up new CPS units on e-bay for $50.00. I have one in the glovebox now. This is a bigger problem than Ford or Navistar want to admit. You really have to watch you dealer. They don't make any money off a warranty claim. If they can find something else to get you on, they will do it. These forums expose most problems we all encounter. If I han't been searching for answers myself, I would have really got screwed over by the stealership. People, use this forum. We have strength in numbers.
