My excursion was just broken into They broke the front door lock. I need a good alarm system, any suggestions? Does anyone know about how much will it cost to repair or replace the lock.
Thanks Chris |

Chris,
I have a Viper 550 alarm. It also has a remote start integrated with it. The key fob has a 2-way communication system so if the alarm goes off, it beeps the key fob and shows me which sensor was tripped. It also has a constant read-out on the alarm's status and whether the doors are locked/unlocked.
Since I use an alarm and also have the 5-key keypad, I can count the times on one hand that I've actually used the key to lock/unlock the door on my X in the 5 years I've owned it. I believe you can install the rear-style door handle without the keyhole in order to prevent someone from punching it in again. I have not done this but have often considered it with as little as I use the key in the lock.
Sorry to hear about the bad news. Good luck in your quest for an alarm. I think I paid about $500 (parts & installation) for mine (5 years ago).

Hey I get stuff wholesale. If you want I can get one simular to the Viper 550 but is made by CrimeStopper www.crimestopper.com either the CS-2014FM or the CS-2016FM for $225 just need to see if a local shop would be able to install it. They sell at shops around here for $400 plus $150 to install. Let me know mountolympusav@cox.net

I've also got a Viper 550 ESP, however it's in the F250.
A few months ago a crazed loser decided it would be cool to bust in the Excursion on the passenger front door. My wife got to the vehicle late in the evening sat in the driver seat looked over to see the broken glass called me and the factory horn alarm started beeping. After a quick inspection we noticed nothing was stolen and it looked as though the could be theif didn't even enter the vehicle.
Question is, could the factory horn alarm gone off and scared off the villian?
My wife has always wanted a remote start for the X so perhaps now living close the Twin Cities it's time for a alarm/remote start system.

Excursions don't have factory alarms. Only PATS, which disables the ignition and requires that special key to start the truck.
These trucks are easy to break in to via the door handles. I suggest replacing the broken handles with new ones like these.
Handles with theft deterrent
I cannot comment on an alarm since I have never put one in or had to buy one that didn't happen to come already included...

I've heard several people say there is no alarm on the Excursion past the PATS but the horn did sound when my wife got in the driver seat.
Could the vehicle have an aftermarket alarm system that sounds the horn on intrusion? The truck was bought with 104K miles from the orginal owner but there is no evidence of an aftermarket system anywere.

A remote start is something once you get, you'll never have another vehicle without it...
and you'll say "Why didn't I get this sooner!"
They are the MOST used option on the three excursions I've had...
in winter, it will eventually warm the engine (never idles long enough to warm the interior),
but in summer, it pays for itself in pre-cooling the beast down !!!
Have heard great things about the crimestoppers and vipers ---
(which many Circuit Cities and Best Buys sell and install IIRC)
but I opted for the Ford Gold from the dealer which I bargained for at purchase time...
it does more than I will ever need, but the remote start is the best part of it...
I, as many others, usally ignore and/or am bothered by car alarms since they MAY be a theft deterrent, but too many that have the sensitive motion sensors go off with false alarms too often...
Remember to register it with your insurance company - mine gives a 10% discount with an alarm...

Roger that, JohnBoy. State Farm gives a discount for car alarm systems.
I agree about annoying car alarms. The nice thing is having the key fob that tells you when your vehicle alarm is going off. Then you can run out to your X like a raging lunatic and can scare away the would-be thieves. Plus, the 2-way communication is also nice so that when you're in an area where you can see your X, you can still send the remote start signal and know that your vehicle received it, and if it started or not. Perfect for the office!

Yes sir, while I LOVE the remote start, without the two way, some times I have to guess if it started or not...
at night it's easy if I am in line of sight, but during the day....
just hope it's cooling that beast off
