I have recently had a lot of shaking issues with the '01 Ex. I brought it to the Ford dealer, and they said they checked pinion angles, the balance of the shaft, rear differential, and many other things. They also road forced balanced the wheels and identified the two rear as being out of balance. Me, still not a believer had them put 4 new wheels and tires from a fresh '05 onto my rig, and the shake was gone. So, I go to Firestone for two new Revos. They confirm that yes the two rears are out of round and replace them, rebalance and drive, and it STILL shook like hell. Firestone then put the two rears to the front and fronts to rear, and now it does not shake. They also kindly mentioned that I had one upside down shock. (heat+exhaustion+do it yourself= upsidedown shock) OK, no biggy. Two questions for you all, why would simply putting the rears to the front and vise versa get rid of the dreaded 60-65mph shake? Also, how can I trust what the dealer checked, when they didn't ever tell me one shock was upside down?? What do you think? (3 quetions, sorry) Thanks, Tom

In my experience, the dealer will rarely comment on aftermarket products installed on your vehicle, even if it is something as simple as shocks. Typically the shocks are something you'd look at though, in case one is seized and also just to verify that they are still in place so maybe they saw the shocks and figured there was a reason it was installed upside down? Who knows. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
I've had situations where I've had an older Fireston tire on the front of my X, it handled like garbage, moved it to the rear, and all was well. As far as the vibration...maybe just the right amount of weight in the rear was causing the tires to behave strange. Either way, you should take it back and say that they need to be replaced because ultimately those tires will end up back in the rear if you rotate them every 5K.
It's possible that one of your wheels/rims is bent as well. This would explain the vibration even after the new tires were installed and would also explain why the vibration was gone after the dealer installed a set of '05 wheels. Just a thought.
If you wanted to do some troubleshooting on your own, you could try and narrow it down to a particular wheel by substituting your spare for the tires that were moved to the front (I'd start by moving the front wheels back to the rear to get the vibration back). Then swap the spare on each side of the rear to see if that eliminates the vibration. I just fear that moving the wheels to the front is a bandaid for the problem because once you rotate, it will most likely bring the vibration back.
How's that for a round-about response?

Please forgive me for asking this as it may be a dumb question; but, is it possible to mount a shock upside down ? I know on the Ranchos I installed it was Murphy-proof installation; i.e. they could go on only one way. Is this not the case with others? Just curious.

Actually Eddie, you bring up a good point. Unless the shock mounts changed from 2000 to 2001, the rear shocks would be impossible to mount upside down as they have a completely different type of mount on each end.
Here's what the shocks look like for my '00 X (top part is on the left side of the pic):

Believe me, a Pro Comp shock can be installed upside down. If it can be done wrong, I can do it. The shock itself has an opening for a bushing on each end, and whether you put a fork for the top or a bolt for the bottom in either hole, it will fit. I got a case of the dumba$$ with that one. I have replaced one wheel, and the dealer and Firestone both said the others appeared straight. You are correct, if it shook in the back and not in the front, it probably should be replaced simply due to tire rotation. Thanks!! Tom
