Hi y'all,

I have an 02 V10 EX. I'm pulling a 31 foot travel trailer, approx 8000 lbs with a weight distributing hitch. I just put on new tires, will be ordering Rancho 9000's shortly. I'm thinking of putting on a set of Air Lift springs to help the sag and level the car more while towing. The install info says to keep the air lines seperate ( instead of using a "T" to fill them equally ) so that they add some sway control. Would it still be necessary to do a rear sway bar too ? I'd rather put the $$ toward a set of radius rods.

Thanks,

Dan

In my honest opinion and experience is that every Excursion should have a rear sway bar no matter what. The radius rods will reduce/eliminate rear axle twist but both components will compliment one another when in place

To eliminate future maintenance issues with air bags I'd swap out the stock rear springs with F250 B codes if your X is a 4x4 but if the X is a 4x2 I'd go add a set of rear blocks from a 4x4 Excursion for reduced cost and still be able to tow 8,000 or better weight with more confidence and keep the nose down. at the same time

Dan,

I agree 100% with Bill on the sway bar -- you definitely need this.

Definately go with the sway bar! I tow a 35' Sierra weighing in at close to 11k. HUGE difference in the towing experience. Matter of fact, HUGE difference when NOT towing!!!

Cheers!

Dan - Thanks for the quasi-endorsement, but as much as I'd like to get a set of radius-rods to you, I must agree with the other posts suggesting you install the Hellwig rear anti-swaybar first. Besides, I won't have anymore radius-rods available until late-March or early-April of '06.

The radius-rods and the swaybar perform two separate functions, but work well together in concert. The swaybar will reduce your body-roll ... even to the point of making the entering of parking lots (driving over a dip at an angle) much more comfortable ... plus they'll give increased cornering control and confidence. The radius-rods greatly reduce axle-wrap, and you can read more on that subject at the following link:
http://www.supermotors.org/clubs/fordexcursions/articles/article_1/index.php

Click my username, send me an e-mail, and I'll reply with a radius-rod info-pack FYI.

PS - I agree with avoiding a T-fitting in the air supply lines ... keep them separate. The reason behind that is to eliminate the chance for air to be transferred from one bag to the other side-to-side ... which is very important when cornering hard ... and even more important when cornering with a heavy trailer.

I can't believe any engineer would pass off a vehicle like thr X without a swaybar. It just makes no since!! All the above post are right on. Get a sway bar. I don't know the cost of the Helwig kit but I got a F350 dually from a locale wrecking yard for $50.00. It was like getting a new truck!!

Hellwig's go for about $135-140 shipped to your door from either http://www.summitracing.com or http://www.jegs.com . Be sure to look at my Hellwing installation pics because the instructions they provide are pretty brutal.

Prices have gone up over the years. Hopefully they are putting the extra funds into better instructions!!
