Hello, I have a group of friends w /psd X's and one of them is having trouble starting @20F of below. It's a 01 under warranty and Ford has no clue, last year they fut Ford 10w30 diesel oil w/some kind of anti-foaming additive, and it seemed to cure it. Now winter is here again and the cold start issue is back w/15w40. The owner manual wants you to use 10w30 below 30F, but where can that be found? Another dealer said that the owners manual is wrong, and if you don't use 15w40 you WILL cause engine damage. None of the other X's have this issue. Any info would be greatly be helpful. Thanks |

Most owners I've known use 15w40 oil when the temps are above freezing, and 10w30 oil but must have an API CI-4/SL when the temps are below freezing long term.
Now if he has the extra duneros 5w-40 synthetic is used by many in the cold northern belts.

My manual calls for 15-40w also. I have an old indian trick (no disrespect) we use on our 16L Cat's. Crank on it for 15 seconds with your foot on the floor. Go back to preheat mode which will heat the atomizied fuel in the cylinder. Then start and warmuplike normal. It was 22degrees today. I forgot to plug her in and this is what I did. |

Thanks for all the info, I ended up using Citgo's premium jt-8 Mystic 10w30, and the other day it was 6 degrees out, and it started easily w/out plugging it in. |

Rotella makes a 5w40 Full Synthetic. Excellent cold flow, and has the hot viscosity of 15w40. Extended change intervals, not nearly as costly as "other oils", and I can get it by the gallon at my local W*mart. The way to go IMO.
