Well, I've done a quick search and didn't find anything like this. I was was driving down a city street, turned a corner and, when I when to accerate, it was like I slipped into neutral. The engine just revved. I checked the shift lever thinking I had indeed bumped it into neutral, but no. I coasted into a parking lot and moved the selector through each range several times. Still, no engagement. So I called for a tow. After getting my X home, I started the engine and moved the selector through the ranges. I now had engagement and could drive the X. I didn't take it anywhere though before having it checked out. The next morning, I took it to the Ford dealership, about a mile away (they told me to go ahead and drive it in),and made it to just across the street from Ford. Same symptoms, but now had a noise that sounded like the whine of a power steering pump low on fluid. Yes, I did check the transmission fluid, the night before, and it was at the appropriate level. We pushed the X into Ford's parking lot. About an hour later, a mechanic and the service adviser went out to drive it around the building and made it about 3/4 the way around the lot and experienced the same thing. They just got out and told me the transmission was toast. The "pump probably failed and probably took out the torque converter". Best thing I could do was to order a new transmission. However, it goes into a transmission shop tomorrow for a "look see" and possible repair or rebuild. Has anyone heard of such a thing? Prior to this, the transmission worked great, never any slipping, clunks, or unusual noises. My X is a 2000 LTD with 70,000 miles (V10 4x4) . |

My trans died at 87K. Sounds like virtually the same symptoms. Driving along fine, then out of nowhere it was like it was in neutral and would barely move. There was nothing I could do. It grenaded itself. Hopefully you have an extended warranty to cover the $3,000 bill.

Well, I've got my Ex fixed up, and have had it on the road for almost a week now. I was going to write sooner, but have been quite busy with my work. Anyway, I really wanted to find out what had happened instead of just changing the transmission for a new one. Well, upon pulling the pan, we didn't find any hard parts, so that was some good news. The filter was packed though, with what looked like clutch debris. That's where my pump noise was coming from, starvation, and that is what really dropped me. The debris was from the torque converter lockup clutch going south. I had the transmission rebuilt with a new torque converter, valve body (wouldn't have been practicle to clean the old one of the debris), clutch/rebuild kit, and a few other minor things (seals....). The Ex now runs great. |

Well, I suppose it's OK to do so. Here is a list of the costs as given on the invoice.
Parts: $535
1 New assembly kit
1 new filter
1 new band
1 new bushing/bearing set
Mercon Trans fluid
Rebuilt torque converter: $260
Hard parts: $120
1 new solenoid block assy
Labor: $800
-----------
Total $1715
I chose this route over having Ford put in one of theirs for several reasons:
1) I wanted to know why the transmission failed and not just rely on Ford saying the transmission is "probably" toast and I need a new one. I'm not upset with the Ford dealership at all. They don't tear the transmission down to see what went wrong, they just replace it. I will go back to them for other things and will maintain a good relationship with them.
2) The Ford "new one" is actually a rebuild anyway.
3) I could more easily afford, out of pocket, the $1715 than the nearly $3000 quoted by Ford (this is actually the number one reason).
Although Ford does offer a very good warranty on the "new" transmission, so does the rebuild shop. The rebuild shop has a very good reputation in our area, is nationally affiliated and their warranty is good throughout North America too.

My 2000 Excursion V-10 transmission with 149,000 miles just started fluttering at low RPM's in high gear. It sounds like a thumping sound. I have used it heavily for towing. Did you notice any fluttering? Also who did you go to for repairs? You mentioned they were nationwide. |

My son and I did a 4R100 at home and I'll tell you it is a real good idea while its down to get all new sonnex valves. I had never heard anyone talk about it but there is a high pressure valve for the front pump that jacks up the converter lock. I feel this is a must. Most of the damage done to an automatic happens without you even knowing. The converter is the weakest link in the system. If you pull or like to git after it often (glad I never do that) you should get stronger converter. If not , I would for shure put that valve in now. This one is the only one you can't put in later. |

There were no unusual sounds or symptoms prior to this happening. No "fluttering" or "thumping" or unexpected fluctuations of RPM. The transmission functioned like new. The repair / rebuild shop is affiliated with AAMCO. |

I just experienced transmission failure coming back from Orlando to South Carolina. I felt like it shifted hard a couple of times on the way down and it made a little noise one time and no other problems. COming back, we were cruising around 80-85 and stopped for a pit stop. When I stopped and started back, it sounded like someone had thrown a sack of BB's into the transmission. Did not think we'd get her into high gear but it did change and it did great in overdrive. We limped into the Ford dealer at 20 mph once we got off the interstate. Thankfully it is under extended warranty--will let you know the outcome. BTW, it is a 2001 with 79K..transmission fluid has been changed 3x since I have had it--bought it with 18K miles. Fluid is only 4 months old...Oh well!! Thought it was good to get home the last 250 miles on a banged up transmixer. Hardest part was not making rest stops til we got to the dealer! |
