Hello All,

I will be buying a 04 Diesel X soon and can't decide between 2by or 4by. I will be mainly pulling our 25ft travel trailer over the road. 2by would be cheaper to buy, probably better gas milage, less mechanics to wear out/breakdown.

We don't plan on doing any real off-roading but it might be nice to have the option with the 4by should the opportunity arise. I have had one 4by and it never made it into 4WD save a couple of snow storms. I now live in Florida so snow isn't an issue and we are fair weather campers. I do have a desire to do an several more Western trips (mountains in good weather) and an Alaska drive.

So, X owners; what say you?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to comment

I have had 4 by's for 30 years now. What I have injoyed about it the most is the pulling. Wheather it's a boat or a travel trailer, having the deep gear reduction is handy for backing in a trailer or pulling up a ramp. Your torque converter will thank you.

I agree with kiarasue. This is my first 4x4 and only got it because I got a great deal on the slightly used X that I bought. I did not go out intending to buy one, just wanted a diesel! Well, I am glad that I have the option now. If you have to back up your trailer up an incline or hill, there is not better thing on the planet to have then 4x4 low engaged Downside to the 4x4 is the weight penalty of about 500# off of your GVWR. I just told my wife to pack less

Good luck and happy camping!!

Here's another tid-bit from me. In the NW it rains alot, ok all the time so if you go under the tree's where is wet with leaves on top, its hard to pull without spinning. I also like back contry camping and then with 3 little ones we didn't want to tent it. Here again, put it in low range and climb to yuor hearts content without heating things up.

Thanks for the input everyone. I pulled the trigger on a 04 EB (White/Tan) TD 4X4 with 22k miles on it. Got it for $33.5 by the way. It's an awesome machine.

Guess I should change my screen name from "FutureXOwner" to something more up to date.
