I was told by Caltrans in California this weekend that Excursions (with 4WD AND Snow Tires) must put on Snow Chains. They said it was a Law, and that the CHP was enforcing this Law because of an accident involving an Excursion last week. Has anyone heard of this "Law" or Accident? |

First one for me. I Go over the hill at least a dozzen times a year and have never been stopped and asked to put chains on. Seems a little crazy to me. Hows that any different than having a superduty and going over the hill? Try to get the VC code for it if it's a law I'm calling bogus on that one.

www.dot.ca.gov does say "chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles under 6,500 pounds gross weight ..."
http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/traffops/trucks/trucksize/chains.htm#manufacturer
I was delayed an hour-and-a-half in chain control traffic and then had to turn around, go down the hill and buy chains and then wait again in the traffic going back up!!
I see the law also says I must carry chains anyways. |

Interesting as we never had to chain up with our 99.5 F250 7.3L 4x4 going over Donner Summit but CT must have revised it sometime between June 2002 and now
Thanks for the heads up there Randy! Unfortunately you had to run back down to get a set of chains (ugh)

Was this on I80 or I50? I have a buddy that works in the Placerville office and he said they have not heard of this.
I make the trip all the time and never has a problem.
The R-2 law states that you must "carry chains" even if your not required to use them. Could that be what they were asking?
I always carry them but have never used them on the interstate, I sometime need them once I get off main roads. The're just the wimppy cables but is passes the test!

OK that didn't take long.
He called me back and said that "Thats The Law" Not widely enforced, but he talked to a few other officers and they said might ask Excursions, Utility box pickups, Hummers H1 to chain. Severity of the storm, traffic load and Driver attitude has alot to do with it.
One more reason to hate the Eco-enviormental feel gooders, in their Suabru Foresters!!!

Hello,
Any input on this topic this year! I hope they for got about us over the summer?
It makes me mad knowing they are telling the H1 Hummer owners that they have to chain up while letting every Berkeley Envio-Mental in a Honda Rav-4 with their all season tires. Drive on by.. ( Haven't you said "No-way... those are snow tires" )

This is where I've been buying chains for years. They have the stale laws available. I have to have them in some areas of Pa. when I tow my travel trailer there in the winter. Even have to have them on the trailer. I have'nt needed to put them on yet, but I gotta carry them.
