I recently perchased my 2001 X in December of 2005. Something seems odd in that I have a 4:10 rear and a 3.73 front axle. Does this sound normal? I thought they had to be matching ratio's??

How did you discover (or prove) that your F & R axle ratios are different? One sure-fire method to measure axle ratio is to put a chaulk mark on the driveshaft and on a tire ... turn the shaft by hand, counting the revolutions it takes to turn the wheel 360-degrees (one full rotation). |

Quite simple! Looked at the tag on the axle housing. If you look on one of the cover bolts, you should find a metal tag which indicates the ratio.

I honestly wouldn;t go by the tags. All of them have the 410 on it but that doesn't indicate the ratio.
Go by the front diff. It seems to show the ratio more prominantly.
Or just use the RPM in OD method. 1670 RPM @ 60 = 3.73 1948 RPM @ 60 = 4.30 Give or take a few RPM.
4.10s were NOT EVER an option for the V10 in the Excursion. Only the E-series vans.

That explains it. Thanks. I'll try the method you described to find out the rear ratio.

Yep! 3.73 according to the RPM and speed you gave me. Thanks.
Is it difficult to change the gears if I decide I need more pulling power?

5.4 4.10 ONLY
6.8 3.73 or 4.30
7.3 3.73 only
6.0 3.73 only
I will post up the tag decoder as soon as I can find it again

Swapping gears isn't too hard if you know how and if you have the correct tools. (Not me!)
It can be a bit costly, though. Around $2000+ for front and rear. That is assuming you go to a shop to do it.
