Hi all,
The tow rate for my X is 10K. What determines the tow rating (I'm assuming it's the engine, wheelbase, rear axle, springs, hitch)? Can the rated tow weight be increased by spring, hitch, power adders? Or is it what it is for practical purposes?
Question two; I know there are a million threads to this 9inpart part of the problem) but with all the experience on the list what has been found by experience to be the effective and efficient changes / upgrades for the rear suspension to pull a car hauler. I'm looking to get reengaged with my off-raod activities and would like to know what I can do to improve the tow quality. My X is an '00, completely oe with 113K. I had towed my Bronco previously but the X basically new, now with worn springs I'm curious as to what can be done to better accomodate the 8K plus towing wieght I will be hauling about (just new springs, adders, bags, etc..)?
Thanks,
Chris

The tow rating is also limited by ANY part of your suspension,
which includes the tires and
also the brakes (gotta be able to stop whatever you can make Go )
and IMHO< the biggest factor in proper towing is proper loading of the trailer....
saw one yesterday and even though it was a small 4 wheel enclosed trailer, they must have put ALL the weight in front of the trailer tires...
looked like the letter V as I passed it...
the hitch ALMOST on the ground,
the rear of the trailer and the front bumper of the pickup almost 3 FEET OFF the ground !!!!!!!!!!!!!
And, Of course, it was a simple bumper mount and
his rear bumper was bent to the point of 60 degrees from where it should have been....
a load equalizing hitch would not be able to compensate for hie stupidity
I told my wife, whenever you see idiots like that, give them a wide berth and get ahead of them as soon as you can cuz they are gonna lose it !!!!

I wish I could give an answer in reference to towing, but I can say that 2 of the biggest improvements I made on my Ex were Landyot's Radius Rods and a set of Rancho RS9000X shocks. Next on the suspension mods is a Hellwig sway bar. I would think that would be a start in the right direction for you. I've read posts where others have installed a weight distributing hitch and air bags to help with the sagging. I'm sure other members will chime in with more expertise in the towing dept. Good Luck

Thanks for info to date. I have spec's in a trailer (need to get costs on the 10.4 vs. 12K trailer). I figure I will check into some new springs for the rear. To be honest I have read a number of posts about he Landyots but know little to nothing about them (but looks like that will change).
I figure springs, possibly bags and/or radious arms should help with sag and tow quality. I have a tow pkg on the X with 3.73 so I should have a good foundation (hitch, etc..) for more frequent towing than I have done.
Thanks

I ordered Firestone bags & control kit, and Hellwig Sway-bar. I have some order tech questions in for the springs- I should have ordered by Wednesday.
Thanks much,
Chris

Did you get your airbags installed yet?
I've found mine to be priceless with a heavy trailer.
