I'm getting a 4 in. MBRP system for my Excursion and it's almost here. The only thing is, this is my first time around doing something like this and I'm lost. I've heard and recently read that the downpipe is the hardest part to remove and install. What are some things I should do/avoid when installing the system to make things easier? |

The downpipe is a tight fit, you will probably need two hands. I had to help my exhaust guy with it as he was working from above in the engine compartment and I was underneath the lift that the X was on.
Everything else is straight forward in terms of an exhaust system. Cut off old, weld in new, make sure your mounts are good to go and nothing rubs!

Yeah the 4" will be tight but not impossible to install, you'll lose some low end torque but you'll make up for it in the higher RPM ranges
You know of any Ford dealers in the Spring area that takes Extended warranty work?

if you're doing it yourself...
get a sawzall and from the bottom go as HIGH as you can and cut the downpipe in two...
then remove all the insulation if it has any wrapped around it and unbolt and pull it out...
with a 4 inch you'll probably have to use a crow bar to move the pinch weld on the passenger side out a bit so it doesn't contact when the engine torques....
good luck...
(i chose not to fight it on my 03 I paid I think $85 for the install and a nice chrome tip )
and seeing them climb on top the lift and engine and one underneath I'm glad I didn't try it

My exhaust system installation was a little less than easy. The downpipe was supposed to be one of the hardest part, but it (surprisingly) popped right off. Getting the new 4 in DP on was a bit of a fight. It kept getting hung up on some piece of the turbo and I don't know how I did it, but it just "magically" got itself past it and onto the turbo. The extension pipe was a piece of cake until one of my buddies broke a hanger. The tailpipe and muffler proved to be another tough spot. I actually had to take the right rear shock off in order to get it on. Once I got it all together and started it up, it sounded good, but I hated the way it sounded. So the next morning, I had my Aeroturbine 4040 muffler welded on as close to the downpipe as I could get it. It gave the system the deep, throaty sound it was missing with the stock MBRP muffler. As a result, the MBRP muffler is now on ebaymotors.
As far as warranty work, I know Tomball Ford does, they do work and they do it right; it's who I go to. I think they may also be mod friendly ) Planet Ford, I don't trust them as far as I can throw them. (sometimes) You may also want to checkout Gullo Ford Mercury out in Conroe. They're a no BS dealership and they give some of the best service out there.
Low-end torque loss? Would the added power of a tuner or chip make up for the loss of low end torque? I'm running an SCT X-Calibrator 2 on the 80hp/135tq tune (rearwheel power, more at the flywheel) There is a step above it, but I don't think it would be too healthy for my fuel mileage. |

I haven't installed any guages yet, but I definately need to now. That'll be one of the final mods I do.

I wouldn't do any towing with the truck set in one of the hot programs as you don't want to have premature turbocharger failure due to very high EGT numbers
Get the Pyrometer in there soon as you can
