I am experiencing a starting problem with my '00 4x4 V10 X. It has happened 3x in the last 4 weeks. When I turn the key, all the lights come on, radio plays, headlights work, but thats it. No cranking or anything. Just like the battery is dead, but the lights don't dim when the key is turned. I had the battery checked and it is good. Someone told me that it is a fuel system problem, but would that stop the motor from cranking? Also, if it is a fuel system problem, wouldn't it be there all the time? Hopefully someone can help me before I get stranded somewhere with the family. Thanks in advance. |

A fuel system problem wouldn't prevent the starter from cranking. A fuel system problem would most likely prevent the engine from firing and you would hear your starter cranking and cranking to get the engine to turn over.
What happens when it starts working again? Have you done anything different, or does it just all of a sudden work as it should when you turn the key? I'm wondering if it's not something simple like your transmission gear selecter not being fully engaged into Park. This will prevent it from cranking but will still allow accessories/lights/etc to turn on. Try jiggling it into Park next time this happens to at least determine if this is the problem. If not, then you've ironed out one possibility and we move onto further troubleshooting.
Definitely something you'll ideally want to figure out before turning it over to a dealer so they can spend hours trying to identify the same problem.

Thanks for the quick response. Jiggling the gearshift was the first thing I tried, because thats exactly like what's happening. It's really threw me for a loop. When it happens, nothing. Come back a couple of hours later, and it starts like a champ.
I've checked all the wires to the starter and the battery and they're all tight and clean. I was hoping that this was a common problem, but apparently not.
Thanks again for the quick response, maybe someone will read this that has had the same problem and be able to shed some light on it. |

Does this happen with both keys?
The only thing that will disable the ignition like that is the PATS. (Passive Anti-Theft System)
How are you locking and unlocking your doors?

Don't forget the little point made in the owner's manual about not having anything else dangling on top of the ignition switch while starting. Anything else on the key ring must be hanging below the switch. |

I unlock the doors with the key fob and yea, it does it with both keys. Hey, by the way, Where can I find the factory code for the keyless entry?
I got to thinking today that it seems to happen after I drive it for awhile, like to or from work, and then it won't restart for an hour or two. It's like something needs to reset or cool off. I don't know, if we can't figure this out, I'm going to have to bite the bullett and pay the big bill.
I'd also like to say thanks again for all this help, It's very much appreciated.
The only keys on my key chain are house key and the X's key with the key fob.
Sorry for the edit, started this at 4:30 p.m. Bad hail storm Friday, over 50 holes in the side of my house. The contractor stopped by, then the insurance adjuster called, etc., etc. |

Quote: | With PATS though, I think it disables it from actually starting. The starter will still continue to operate. | He had said something about "No cranking or anything." That's why I thought of the PATS.
