With no warning at all my trans started slipping in 1st gear. It does not want to shift into 2nd. Once in 2nd t will shift normally to 3rd and into 4th. . It slipped a little bit over about a 200-foot distance while waiting for a light to change and then this happened. Checked the fluid smells normal, added 2 quarts and it seemed to shift some-what okay while cold. Have only driven it about 5 miles since this happened. Think that I need to drop the trans pan to see if there is anything loose in the pan, replace the filter and fluid then try driving it.
Any thoughts? These transmissions are too expensive to play around with!
HELP!!!!!!!!

Friend of mine went thru the exact same thing with his 2001 Excursion's trans,it had to be rebuilt
I'm not that savvy of all the aftermarket transmission manufacturers out there but I know Brian's Truck Shop products are top notch and has one of the best reputations amongst SuperDuty/Excursion owners in the country.
In the same situation I'd drop the pan change the fluid and filter, then button it back up to see if helps any as it'll be less than a rebuilt trans.

That's a lot of miles on a stock trans. You may be heading down the road of a rebuild.
About 3 years ago when I had a rebuilt trans installed in my '00 X that only had 87,000 miles on it, it was $3,000. I went with a factory rebuilt trans. I wish I would have gone with an aftermarket rebuilt trans, but you know what they say about hindsight.
Factory Tech Transmissions offers a 3% discount on transmissions to SuperMotors subscribers:
http://www.supermotors.org/resources/links/index.php?id=3#factorytech
Retail price is listed at $3650, but they say to call for details, so perhaps it's cheaper that the list price.
You can also optionally order a Factory tech rebuild kit if you have a local trans guy that can do the rebuild. This will save you some $$$ vs. buying a complete unit.

Seeing how I have about the same mileage (113,500) on a 2001 2x4 you got me a little worried.
Just a couple of weeks ago I noticed what I can only describe as a feeling like someone keeps stepping on the throttle and letting off again. Sort of like cutting in and out but not that noticeable.
It is not the engine, as I have been listening and watching the tach. But whether I am doing 35 or 45, once it shifts into the highest gear it is going to be in, it feels this way. It doesn't happen at 25, that I can tell, and it doesn't happen at 55 or 65 mph. And it doesn't happen under full load, or when moving from a stand still.
Has anyone experienced this feeling? Am I going crazy?

Zero,
I have no idea what could be causing it. But, I would have your transmission looked at. Find a good rebuild / repair shop. NOT one of the franchised parts replacers.
A mechanic fixes things, a parts replacer keeps it going (hopefully). My dad always said this and it is so true!
My transmission is toast. I found a rebuild shop that is going to “build it to take the loading that these beasts put on a transmission” stronger clutch pack, bigger hydro pump, updated torque converter etc. This shop does so many 4R100 transmissions that it is his specialty. He says “Love the truck, Hate the trans, but it keeps my kids in shoes”
From what I have been told the trans is DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN!
It has not been engineered to be bolted up to a 7.3!
This is why FORD will try to void your warranty if you run a chip etc.
I told him that I have been running the SCMT1705 on 80 HP and wanted to bump up the fuel pressure to 70 psi and put a walker bit truck muffler on it, he is going to build it to handle this.
Best of luck to you hope that it is not the trans on your truck!
Jim

Thanks for the input, Jim.
I thought I saw someone posted a while back that I could expect 150,000 out of the trans but maybe I read it wrong.
That is a lot of $$$ to be shelling out. If you don't mind me asking, what was your total bill? I see the average is $3K.
I've thought about getting my hands on a used trans and doing a rebuild/upgrade using the parts in the factorytech kit to save some money and downtime. But again, I have never rebuilt an automatic trans.
If I have to do it, I want to do it once and do it right.
