List,

I have a 2002, 7.3L with 137,000 miles on it. In about the middle of August the engine started having trouble starting in the moring. I don't think it is the battery as she'll start up great for the rest of the day. It's a problem that only seems to occur if the truck has been sitting overnight.

Ideas?

A better description would be nice!

The engin just doesn't seem to want to catch. I don't think it is the batter because it feels like it is getting enough juice. It just cranks but doesn't catch. On the third or fourth try it will catch though, with some white smoke from the tail pipe.

Again, after driving it it won't exhibit that problem until the next morning. The rest of the day it works flawlessly.

Ideas?

I'd take the batteries out and have a shop do a load test on them. If that isn;t the problem, maybe the glow plugs?

Run a code scan for error codes as it could be the fuel quality, fuel filter, fuel pump, oil quality/ pressure, glow plugs,IDM,etc.

And where do I get the device which will run this scan and display the codes?

I don't have a chip, would this option necessitate buying one?

Most Autozone,Kragens,Checkers, etc can read the trucks computer via an OBD-II scanner for no charge.

There's various power programmers that include code readers in the software that'll also clear the error codes. Edge Evolution and SuperChips Microtuner are the most popular.

Did you fix it?

Well, if you consider buying two new batteries as fixing the problem, yes, I guess I did.

Here is what I think happened. I never had a problem starting the car while living in Los Angeles. But, not knowing much about cars in a cold climate as Santa Fe, New Mexico, I wasn't allowing the glow-plugs to heat up prior to attempting to starting the engine in the morning (it was getting very cold at night).

So I would be attempting to turn the engine over on cold glow-plugs which only drained the battery.

Thus a very expensive $400 dollar lesson on glow-plugs and cold enviroment living.

Russell if you run into a jam while in LA I have a couple friends in the LA/San Diego area that are 7.3L gurus if you need some help from the locals.

So you had to get new glow plugs installed along with a new set of batts?
