I have always rotated and balanced my tires at every oil change in order to maximize ride comfort and tire life. Sunday I noticed a slight shimmy in the rear-end during some highway running and lastnight I noticed cupping on both rear tires; no cupping on fronts. It's not bad, yet, but it's noticeable...every 4 inches or so there is a low spot (dip) that goes around the entire tire about 1/3 of the way in from the outside of the tire edge.

I checked my maintenance log and I did my shocks about 25K miles ago. Wheel bearings are fine as far as I know and tires were rotated a mere 4K miles ago. Any thoughts or ideas as to what the most likely culprit(s) is? Thanks.

An out of spec alignment will cause cupping and so will crabbing which is when the rear tires aren't tracking with the front tires in a straight fashion.

As a follow-up. I took it to the local tire shop to let them have a look at it. They gave the suspension the once over and said it was mint, no issues. They road tested it and could feel the same vibration in the rear-end that I was feeling at highway speed. They did a "road force balance" on all four tires, which is a balancing of the tire/wheel assembly under load and found that all four were "out of spec" - whatever that means. What a change in ride, I'll tell you. The beast has never been smoother and although they want me back in 3,000 miles for a look-see, they suspect the issue has been solved. If you've never had road force balancing done give it some consideration because it dramatically improved the ride at highway speeds.

Bill, the tires were not replaced. I'm running 265/75/16 Bridgestone Rugged Trail T/A. The road force balance offsets the imperfections in both balance and roundness of the tire and wheel in unison...SMOOTH.
